Although she couldn’t vote, Victoria Woodhull ran for president in 1872. A former medium and the first female broker, she ran as the head of the newly-formed Equal Rights Party. This was her only even marginally successful political foray; she ran two more times becoming increasingly radical and unpopular. (At one point, she claimed she was “destined” because of a “prophecy” to become president.) She ended her life in quiet retirement with her third husband in England.
