They had a unique - and fascinating - insight into the private lives of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Now, former White House butlers and other staff members have revealed their secrets about the couple's time inside the six-floor mansion, which features a whopping 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms.

The dedicated professionals, also including maids, cooks, florists and doormen, reportedly witnessed the then-president and intern Monica Lewinsky cavorting for years before their affair hit the headlines.

They also heard Mrs Clinton 'clock' her husband with what they believed to be one of the 20 or so books she kept on her bedside table during the scandal, leaving blood stains on the couple's bed.

And it wasn't just the personal details of the Clintons' lives the workers were privy to. They have seen an intimate side to many presidents and first ladies that has remained hidden from the public eye.

Some saw Nancy Reagen rule the White House with an iron fist, often berating her husband, Ronald - and one even walked in on John F Kennedy swimming naked with his secretaries, it is reported.

And in recent years, employees have apparently witnessed President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle dancing intimately to Mary J Blige's hit, Real Love, with Mrs Obama dressed in sweats.

The incredible revelations have been disclosed in political journalist Kate Andersen Brower's new book, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House, to be published on Tuesday.

The book, seen in advance of its Harper publication date by the New York Post, includes interviews with more than 100 former members of White House staff, as well as several ex-first family members.

Its scheduled publication comes just weeks after a Washington Post gossip column claimed that a White House florist was 'escorted from the building' after her employment ended without notice.

Laura Dowling, 55, a French-trained artisan from Virginia, spent six years as the Obama administration's chief florist before quitting last month amid rumors of a rift with Mrs Obama.

Sources close to Ms Dowling suggested that she was upset at having to leave - and blamed her demise on the intense rivalry within the White House's small coterie of decorators and designers.

In Brower's book, workers tell of how Mr and Mrs Clinton sometimes got into 'pitched battles' during their time in the Washington DC mansion from 1993 to 2001, 'shocking staff with their vicious cursing'.

Florist Ronn Rayne found two butlers listening to one particularly aggressive dispute through the door of the West Sitting Hall. After pausing himself, he heard Mrs Clinton yell: 'goddamn b*****d'.

The then-first lady, who later served as secretary of state from 2009 to 2013, subsequently threw a 'heavy' object - believed by staff to have been a lamp - across the room, Brower apparently writes.

And the couple's arguments reportedly only increased after Mr Clinton's affair with Miss Lewinsky became public in January 1998, with the then-president forced to sleep on a sofa for months.

'For three or four months,' Brower writes, 'the president slept on a sofa in a private study attached to their bedroom... Most of the women on the residence staff thought he got what he deserved.'

Later, presumably after Mrs Clinton had allowed Mr Clinton to return to their bed on the White House's second floor, a maid reportedly discovered the bed sheets covered in the latter's blood.

Although Mr Clinton claimed he had hurt himself running into the bathroom door, members of staff thought otherwise. One told Brower: 'We’re pretty sure [Mrs Clinton] clocked him with a book.'

Indeed, Mrs Clinton would have had her choice of books to use for such a purpose - for there were at least 20 on the couple's bedside table, including the Bible, Brower notes, according to the Post.

After the affair between then-22-year-old Lewinsky, who served as an intern at the White House in 1995 and 1996, and Mr Clinton, 49, was revealed in 1998, it was widely covered by the world's press.

Miss Lewinsky claimed to have had sexual relations with Mr Clinton on nine occasions from November 1995 to March 1997. However, news of the scandal did not come as a shock to White House staff.

Employees had regularly seen the then-president spending one-on-one time with the Lewis & Clark College graduate - and had even started telling each other when they had had a 'Lewinsky sighting'.

Since the scandal, Mrs Clinton, who has a daughter, Chelsea, with her husband, has been at the center of another controversy over her exclusive use of a personal email address while in office.

A U.S. House committee is currently seeking a private interview with Mrs Clinton over her use of the private address, as well as a personal computer server, during her time at the State Department.

Brower's book, which also reveals intimate stories about staff members' personal lives (including how a housekeeper and engineer fell in love), goes on to reveal details of the Kennedys' personal lives.

When then-first lady Jackie Kennedy was away at the couple's farm in Virginia, a White House worker apparently stumbled across her husband, John F Kennedy, swimming naked in the mansion's pool.

And Mr Kennedy was not alone. He was joined by several female White House secretaries, it is said. Naked women were also sighted on the second floor of the building when Mrs Kennedy was away.

Other revelations in the book include Jimmy Carter's sons' passion for bongs (their rooms were constantly filled with smoke) and their father's 'uncontrollable sobbing' after losing the election.

And employees tell of how Lyndon Johnson adored washing in a specially-built, powerful shower, while Mrs Reagen rejected White House chefs' meals and gave them seemingly impossible deadlines, it is said.

In relation to the current president, usher Worthington White told Brower of how he was startled to see the Obamas dancing to Blige's 'Real Love' during their first night in the White House in January 2009.

Perhaps the sight would have come as less of a shock had he known that Mrs Obama would be busting some 'mom dancing' moves on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon six years on (as seen on the show last Thursday).

Meanwhile, butler James Jeffries said that while the couple were initially uncomfortable about being waited on, their race helped to create a bond with the mostly African-American staff.

On the other hand, George H W Bush and his wife, Barbara, were always on good terms with staff - and were particularly forgiving if employees made mistakes, Brower reportedly writes.

With regard to Ms Dowling's recent departure from the White House, the 55-year-old florist's lawyers said she had resigned for new 'exciting opportunities'. Meanwhile, Mrs Obama's office released a belated statement praising the designer's 'lively and colorful' arrangements.

However, a source who wished to remain anonymous told Daily Mail Online: 'She is very sad about leaving the White House. She was very proud to work there and this has come as a shock.'.

They added: 'It's all about jealousy - Laura has not put a foot wrong.'

An online description for Brower's book explains how the White House staff members would all 'gather in the lower level’s basement kitchen to share stories, trade secrets' and forge friendships.

The book is full of 'moving details that illuminate day-to-day life at the White House', it adds.
