Justice League of America #1 - $5.99
By Bryan Hitch | DC Comics
It’s finally here! Ever since we heard Bryan Hitch was doing JLA, we’ve been pumped to see what he has in store for us. Obviously it will be packed with widescreen visuals and insane action scenes, but we’re also intrigued to see what sort of story he tells using the main seven Leaguers.

What we know so far is that it takes place in real-world New York City (what?!) and features a villain with ties to Krypton. Sounds like a smashing good time to us.Southern Bastards #9 - $3.50
By writer Jason Aaron & artist Jason Latour | Image Comics
You’ve heard us praise Southern Bastards before and we refuse to stop! This is, hands down, one of the best comic books in years. The team of Jasons has done more in eight issues than many comics manage to do in their entire runs. It’s a story infused with football, BBQ, and blood and it never ceases to deliver.
A new storyline kicks off with this issue, and given how the creative team took the last story arc in such an unexpected direction, we’re eager to see where they take it this time around.
Thors #1 - $3.99
By writer Jason Aaron & artist Chris Sprouse | Marvel Comics
And would you look at that, Jason Aaron has a second must-buy comic book out this week. In Battleworld, the police force is a whole squad of Thors. Who would dare break the law with the threat of a Mjolnir-smashing looming overhead? This comic follows their exploits as they investigate a series of murders. The hook is strong, but really, we are just in love with how Aaron writes Thor, so we can’t wait to see his take on not only Jane Foster’s Thor but Beta Ray Bill, Throot, and all the other Thors of the multiverse. That’s a whole lotta hammers.
Mad Max: Fury Road - Furiosa #1 - $4.99
By writer George Miller & Various & artist Tristan Jones | Vertigo (DC Comics)
Mad Max: Fury Road knocked our socks off in the movies, but did you know that Vertigo is putting out one-shots that feature backstory on the main characters? Our new favorite hero, Imperator Furiosa, is up this week and we finally get a look at how she came to meet Immortan Joe’s “wives” and what led to them planning their daring escape plan.
We’ve already read this one in advance, so know that if you’re keen to get every scrap of history on the mysterious Furiosa, you’ll want to pick this one up.
Black Canary #1 - $2.99
By writer Brendan Fletcher & artist Annie Wu | DC Comics
Brenden Fletcher is co-writer on the sensation known as Batgirl, and now he’s taking a supporting character from that book and giving her her own series. Black Canary has seen a retooling of her look and attitude, and it’s definitely something we can get behind. She’s a determined, tough-as-nails lead singer of a rock band called, you guessed it, Black Canary. Even her fishnets and leather jacket look spot-on as part of her punk look. It all makes so much sense that it’s a wonder no one thought of this take on the character before.
And the icing on the cake is Annie Wu’s art, which is stripped down of the usual superhero fare. Instead, her characters are lean and full of energy, allowing her to orchestrate slick action scenes while still injecting a surge of emotion into the proceedings. For a character that is one of DC’s premiere hand-to-hand fighters who also happens to pack a sonic “canary cry” blast, that’s just the kind of artwork you’d hope for.
Mega Man #50 - $4.99
By writer Ian Flynn & artist Dan Schoening & Various | Archie Comics
In today’s world of comics with its constant relaunches and sudden cancellations, it’s rare for a series to reach 50 issues, so that’s why we’re stoked to see Mega Man make that milestone. This issue marks a huge turning point in the current “Worlds Unite” storyline, which features the worlds of Mega Man and Sonic fusing together. That’s just the kind of crazy, fun story we’d expect for an issue like this. Here’s to 50 more! Joshua is IGN’s Comics Editor.
