James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff star in Joseph Kahn’s (Detention, Toque) R-rated, NSFW Power Rangers short film. We did not think the Power Rangers could be this dark. We were so wrong.
Created just for shits and grins, Kahn cobbled together what he’s labeling a “deboot FAN FILM.” Writing quite plainly in his video description that this is…
…not a pilot, not a series, not for profit, strictly for exhibition. This is a bootleg experiment not affiliated or endorsed by Saban Entertainment or Lionsgate nor is it selling any product. I claim no rights to any of the characters (don’t send me any money, not kickstarted, this film is free). This is the NSFW version. An alternate safe version is on youtube.
We’ve linked to the safe for work youtube above, but really you need to see this thing with the violence it was created with, and the language. It’s like Point Break’s dialogue meets Tarantino blood brawls. But, you know, with Power Rangers.
UPDATE: Looks like the vimeo is down, here’s the SFW youtube version for now. Will update when the darker version gets back online.
UPDATE 2: SFW version pulled on youtube. NSFW version below. Also available on Facebook.
If you were wondering who the cast was, here’s a rundown. It’s just… insane.
Katee Sackhoff – Kimberly/Pink
James Van Der Beek – Rocky
Russ Bain – Tommy/Green
Will Yun Lee – General Klank
Gichi Gamba – Zack/Black
Update: This short was also produced by Adi Shankar of the Judge Dredd: Superfiend “bootleg verse.” And when we asked why he wanted to reboot Power Rangers into a darker, grittier world he elaborated to io9, “When I was a child I had two favorite TV shows the X-Men animated series and Power Rangers. I eventually came to the realization that high school students weaponized to fight an intergalactic threat would turn those kids into some seriously disturbed adults with severe PTSD.” Yes, yes it would.
