Keep Baby Carrots in Water in the Fridge for Easy, Healthy Snacking

The urge to snack in the middle of the day can be strong, and it’s easy to reach for the chips if a healthier option isn’t nearby. Keep that option in front of you, on the top shelf of the fridge—that way the next time you head to the kitchen, the first thing you find are some fresh carrots, peppers, or another veggie.

James Fell, writing at his blog, explains that when he’s hungry, it’s not uncommon for him to head to the kitchen and open the fridge just to see what’s there. By keeping a few baby carrots in a bowl of cold water right in front of the door, he sees them immediately and has a mental trigger to just reach into the water, grab some carrots, and munch away. By setting up that trigger, he can build a healthier snacking habit, instead of digging through the pantry for something far less healthy.

If baby carrots aren’t your forte, maybe some sliced peppers in a plastic baggie will do the trick, celery sticks in water to keep them crisp, cucumber slices or spears, or even broccoli florets or another similarly “free” food. It may sound silly, but the core point is sound. You break the urge to snack by giving yourself immediate gratification, and you challenge yourself to the “broccoli test,” meaning if you’re not hungry enough to snack on those carrots, you’re not really that hungry, are you?
