LP stalwart on Sec. Mar Roxas: Hindi kasalanan ang maging mayaman

A Liberal Party (LP) stalwart on Tuesday said Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II ought to make his being born rich an asset in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

“Kasalanan ba niyang ipinanganak siyang mayaman? Ang pinakamahalagang mensahe na madala niya ay hindi ‘yung makita siyang trying hard siyang maging masa. Ipakita niya na despite the fact na mayaman siya ay gusto niyang marating din ng mga tao ‘yung mataas na antas ng buhay,” House Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales II said.

Roxas’ ratings in voter preference surveys has been plunging in recent months, with the Pulse Asia’s November poll showing only six percent of respondents saying they would vote for him as president if the elections were held then.

He has purportedly long been eyed as the administration’s standard bearer for the 2016 elections.

Gonzales said Roxas’ affluence can become his asset if it is highlighted in a well-crafted campaign message.

Gonzales, who has been in politics for nearly two decades, said the aspiration to help uplift the lives of others is a monopoly of politicians coming from poor backgrounds.

“Kahit naman sino pwedeng [mag]hangad na maging mataas ang antas ng buhay ng mga tao,” he said.

When asked to elaborate on what Roxas could do to improve his ratings, Gonzales said: “Bahala na si Mar… I’m sure lahat ng gustong kumandidato may ginagawa namang media plan.”

Earlier this month, Roxas drew flak and puns from netizens when he fell off a motorcycle in his attempt to reach a far-flung town in Eastern Samar after typhoon Ruby struck.

Malacañang and several LP members came to his defense following the incident, saying it proves he is serious in doing his job as a Cabinet official.  — ELR/NB, GMA News
