Snake Rewind will be a free download – but includes a number of paid upgrades

Snake infuriated and entertained some 400 million Nokia mobile phone owners after it premiered on the chunky 6110, back in 1997.

The classic arcade game – which sees players navigate and grow a line of dots around the small screen – will return to modern handsets next week.

The refreshed Snake smartphone game has been created by ex-Nokia engineer Taneli Armanto – who built the original game.

We never imagined that it would become the classic mobile game

"When we created Snake for the Nokia 6110 in 1997, we wanted to give people an entertaining experience," he revealed.

"But we never imagined that it would become the classic mobile game."

The remake – dubbed Snake Rewind – gives players the ability to rewind the action after you crash the snake.

New bonus fruit prizes which endow the snake with special powers have also been added.

Unlike the original Nokia game, the development team at Rumilus Design have added an online leader board to rank the best players around the globe.

Snake Rewind will be a free download – but includes a number of paid upgrades, including additional fruit power-ups.

The new smartphone game features ten additional levels which can be unlocked as you progress through the game.

Developer Taneli Armanto added: "Snake Rewind takes the iconic elements and intuitive gameplay from the original Snake game and combines them with cool visual effects, sounds and innovative new features."

  • Snake Rewind debuts on iOS, Android and Windows smartphone stores on Thursday 14th May 2015.
