Dig In: Fairfield County Celebrates Earth Day With Variety Of Events

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Earth Day, celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, will be upon us April 22. A host of events, neighborhood cleanups, volunteer projects and family activities are taking place across Fairfield County during the weekends that bookend it.

Here's a sample of events:

April 18, Stamford: The "Recycle-O-Rama" Earth Day Celebration" takes place at the St Cecilia Church/School parking lot, where you're invited to start your spring cleaning. Donations of gently used items from doors, furniture, and appliances to unwanted paper, sports equipment, clothing and electronics are welcome Data shredding will also be on hand. April 19, Darien: The Darien Library wants you to change your thinking about reducing, reusing and recycling. In an "All Things Green" effort, it is challenging attendees to race around the library, meeting with different organizations along the way, to learn about all the green initiatives going on in Darien. Go Green: 2 to 4 p.m., 1441 Post Road, 203-655-1234, www.darienlibrary.org.

April 22, Norwalk: The Maritime Aquarium is offering special butterfly-themed activities, including the chance for visitors to take home milkweed seedlings to plant. The aquarium’s special Earth Day activities are part of Party for the Planet, the signature Earth Day event coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.Go Green: 11 am to 3 p.m., 10 N. April 22, Greenwich: Shop and help the Earth at the same time. Participating Greenwich shops such as Harvest, Home Boutique of Greenwich, Smart Kids' Toys, Tangerine, The Well Appointed House and Vineyard Vines, among others) will donate a portion of their proceeds to the Greenwich Land Trust on April 22, with several shops sponsoring special Earth Day events at their locations. April 23, Bridgeport: Go beyond green this Earth Day with two arts events at 1042 Broad St. First, there's a solar-/lunar-themed showcase gallery exhibit at Read's Ground Floor Gallery, with an opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. ($5 suggested donation). The exhibit will continue until May 16. Second, from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m., the public is invited to take part in recycled art activities and to view the masterpieces area MDAC artists have created from “trash."
