All roads lead to Cebu: PNoy, Binay, Roxas, Poe hold events in vote-rich province

LAPU-LAPU City, Cebu – President Benigno Aquino III and three possible presidential candidates will hold events in this vote-rich province on Monday, over a month before the official filing of candidacies for the 2016 elections.

Aquino is scheduled to inspect road projects in Lapu-Lapu City and Cebu City, which is currently hosting a meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) policy makers.

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, the administration's presumptive standard-bearer for the 2016 polls, will hold a so-called "Daang Matuwid Dialogue" at the Cebu National University in Cebu City on Monday morning.

Later in the day, Aquino and Roxas will host a "gathering of friends" at the Cebu Coliseum, projected to be attended by 8,000 representatives from various sectors.

Vice President Jejomar Binay, the opposition's presumptive presidential candidate, will meanwhile visit barangays in the cities of Talisay and Toledo. He already made rounds in Lapu-Lapu and Cebu City on Sunday.

Senator Grace Poe, who recently emerged as top presidential choice in pre-election popularity surveys, will attend the Foundation Week celebration of the University of San Carlos.

Poe is also being wooed by Roxas to be his running mate.

Cebu had over 2.5 million registered voters during the 2013 midterm polls, making it the most vote-rich province in the country.

Aquino won most votes in Cebu during the 2010 presidential polls. The province's current governor, Hilario Davide III, is aligned with the ruling Liberal Party (LP).

Also in the 2010 polls, Binay lost to Roxas in the vote-rich province.

At a press conference in this city over the weekend, Binay said he is confident that he will get more votes in the province in 2016.

The vice president also said that he is expecting the support of Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama. —ALG, GMA News
