"Maximum" Bob Lutz is best known for his long career as a high ranking auto executive and a penchant for speaking his mind about the state of things in the industry. He's also an accomplished pilot and a former aviator in the Marines. He'll lean on that latter experience in his new role helping to restore some of the historic Pearl Harbor sites that are falling into disrepair.
Lutz will be the new national campaign committee chairman for the Pacific Aviation Museum, organization spokesperson Anne Murata told Autoblog, and he will assist it with fundraising. The museum's goal will be restoring the grounds, hangars, and control tower on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor in time for next year's 75th anniversary of the attack. Lutz will visit the landmark in late January to meet with officials there. Some of the sites are open to the public now, but about another $1.5 million is still necessary to rejuvenate the tower, according to museum executive director of development Elissa Lines. The group hopes to raise $10 million to $15 million through 2016 for further upgrades.
