Chicago Steel to wear ultra-cool jerseys at Junior Club World Cup

The Junior Club World Cup isn’t the biggest event on the international hockey calendar, but it’s definitely one of the coolest. And now it might be the most fashionable.

Each August, eight to 10 club teams from around the world gather in Russia to face off in the name of bragging rights and national pride. For the past four years, USA Hockey has been represented by a club from the USHL. The American reps have brought home a medal from each of their past three trips—the only country that can make that claim.

This time around, the Chicago Steel will be carrying the U.S. banner into Yekaterinburg, Russia, for the tournament that runs from Aug. 24 to 30. The Steel are competing in Group A against junior club teams from Latvia, Kazakhstan and Russia. Group B consists of teams from Finland, Sweden, Belarus and Russia.

“It is a great opportunity for the Steel to bring the city of Chicago a second world championship this summer and to set a record for the USHL as the only league to medal in four consecutive seasons,” said Bob Fallen, the USHL’s President and Commissioner. “The USHL is excited to once again represent the United States and we know that Chicago will be prepared to compete at the highest level.”

The Steel and forward Nick Olczyk, the son of former Blackhawks center Ed Olczyk, might have a tough time bringing home the gold, but they have already got the competition licked in one category.

Check out Chicago’ amazing jerseys, which were specially designed for this tournament. The home blacks feature an American flag–Superman logo nestled above the Chicago skyline, all on top of a reinforced steel-type background. The road grays go with the club’s traditional logo superimposed over a pair of sledgehammers and the skyline with the Superman logo on the sleeves.

Amazing.

They might want to bring more than one set of each overseas. With a look that good, their opponents will probably try to rekindle the tradition of the post-game sweater swap.
