KYLIE MINOGUE sat outside the studio making a basket before recording her 1987 hit I Should Be So Lucky, pop impresario Pete Waterman has revealed.

Kylie Minogue, seen here in 1989, was a hitmaker for Stock Aitken Waterman

He told Radio 4’s The Reunion: “When I met Kylie she was sitting in reception doing some basket work. You know, that’s what she is like.”

Recording engineer Phil Harding told the show, which has reunited people from the Stock Aitken Waterman hit factory, no one had a clue who Kylie was, despite her role in TV soap Neighbours.

He said: “I didn’t recognise her and I don’t think many of the other staff recognised her.”

Sinitta told radio host Sue MacGregor she was jealous of the Australian star when she recorded 1990 hit Better The Devil You Know.

The Toyboy singer, 51, who also worked with the pop producers, said: “I remember thinking, ‘I’m more the wild child, please give me that song’.”

Jason Donovan, 46, told MacGregor he wouldn’t have had a music career without Kylie, his soap co-star. After recording duet Especially For You with Minogue he sold out stadiums across Britain. “It just went nuts,” he said.

Waterman and production partners Mike Stock and Matt Aitken, sold 40 million records and had 100 top 40 hits with artists such as Donovan, Rick Astley, Mel and Kim and Bananarama.

Waterman, 68, said: “I certainly don’t remember any singer ever taking more than 25 minutes to record a track. We said, ‘You go in there and sound fresh and exciting because that’s what we’re selling’.”

The Reunion is on BBC Radio 4 today at 11.15am.
