Erik Burnham

Erik Burnham is a Minnesotan writer and artist that first broke into comics with a series of humorous short stories in the Shooting Star Comics Anthology. These stories featured his original creation, Nick Landime, and culminated in a one-shot: Nick Landime vs. the World Crime League, published by Shooting Star in 2005.

Off and on, in this same time period, Erik also produced a short run of an online strip, The Down Side, until technical issues wore him down. He aims to return to the strip one day.

In 2007, Erik found produced work for two other anthologies – a short humor piece for History Graphics Press’ Civil War Adventures #1, and a horror story for Gene Simmons’ House of Horror #3, produced by IDW Publishing.

This lead to several other projects for IDW, up to and including his critically acclaimed run on the ongoing GHOSTBUSTERS comic book.

Erik has worked on other projects not related to comic books, and hopes one day to share those with the public at large. In the meantime, he still lives quietly in Minnesota; any rumors about this being because he’s completely afraid of the forty-nine other states (and Canada) remain unverified at this time.

NEVER GIVE UP…NEVER SURRENDER!!!

I found this to be just as entertaining as the previous, and and so far only other, graphic novel sequel! It really is a treat getting to see these characters continue having adventures after the credits roll. I found the plot line here to be very justified, even more so than the last graphic novel. It did a great job of tying into the climatic “omega-13” use from the film (which makes me appreciate the scene more cause that was the only scene I kinda found unnecessary). All the characters felt like themselves, and I even like the expanded role of Brandon in this entry!

All in all, if you’re a fan of the movie, the two graphic novel sequels are a nice little treat!

After their involvement with the aliens in Galaxy Quest: The Movie, the cast of Galaxy Quest get a new series. But the events shown in the movie comes back to haunt them when other aliens hunt them down for revenge. The crew has to set out once more into space while the aliens fill-in for them at a SF convention on Earth. Plenty of action and quips fill out the entertaining story. Just makes you wonder what new conundrum will bring the GQ crew back into space next time?

The story and writing is where you expect it to be, but one can only assume there was some kind of lawsuit that prevented any of the characters from looking anything like the actors who played them. Either that or the artist never saw the movie. Or he's blind. You pick.

Huge fan of the movie, this plays well to the movies strengths. Not recommended for anyone who doesn't already love the movie

I understand there might be issues with likeness rights, but it's still weird to read a comic series continuing the story of a movie whose characters look almost, but not completely, unlike the actors who played the roles. Fortunately, the voices of the characters are captured well, and that's enough to make the story work. The Galaxy Quest crew gets pulled into a civil war on an alien planet due to their use of the Omega 13 causing the tide to turn. While they're out in space, some of the aliens are replacing them on Earth. It's two interesting concepts, but neither really gets enough exploration to make them work. The story is ultimately pretty shallow, and is ultimately just there to set up a couple of showpiece moments (the digitizer moment, and the aliens behaving badly), and it takes forever to start (it takes the first two issues of a four-issue series to get the crew back into space, for example). It's not an embarrassment to the movie, but it's not living up to the standards either. Unless you're a die-hard Galaxy Quest fan, you're not missing much by skipping this.

Much like his work on the IDW Ghostbusters continuation, Erik Burnham again proves his chops for faithful character writing. All members of the Galaxy Quest crew sound like their movie counterparts, with Burnham nailing many of the characters' idiosyncrasies.

The overall story also shines, touching upon how the sequel show, The Journey Continues was received, whilst focusing on how the movie's activation of the Omega-13 has altered part of the galaxy for the worse. This leads the heroes on another "galactic quest" to fix yet another faux pas.

The TP is a little short (4 issues in total), and could have been expanded further as other licenses have done under the IDW banner. The artwork by Nacho Arranz , though good, has clearly been drawn to avoid actors' likenesses possibly due to legal issues, and therefore some linework on the white male characters may confuse readers. Should that be the case, you can fall back on reading Burnham's fantastic dialogue to iron out any character uncertainties!

Galaxy Quest The Journey Continues is take on from previous books with laugh out loud moments and an action packed script that throws in twists and turns in abundance! :D The characters are all spot on and the same time expanding and developing in new ways! :D The art really makes everything explode out of the page really capturing the characters expressions brilliantly! :D Prepare to have to have you ribs hurting all the time 'This is what happens when we don't take Guy!'

The characters development though is all up there on the screen/page as we get to see a more grown up version of Brandon and we can see that Nesmith and Alexander are starting to embrace their new roles! :D Gwen DaMarco get to fence with Jason Nesmith throughout and this provides the tone with the book! :D Galaxy Quest The Journey Continues is genuinely funny throughout with the characters as would expect finding themselves up the river without a boat and how they actually manage to extract themselves is hilarious well done! :D

The actual plotline of the story neatly dovetails as well with the original movie really emphasising that what they did with the Omega-13 was actually universe wide and effected more than they know! :D At the same time the artwork is terrific with the action flowing in abundance though you may have to squint to pretend the characters look like they did on film! :D The panes of the book really convey the pace of the script and the hole whole works startlingly creatively in ways that you would not expect! :D

Galaxy Quest The Journey Continues works as brilliant story in itself but throughout has nod and winks to the Sci-Fi Fantasy throughout! :D Galaxy Quest The Journey Continues takes particular pleasure as well in poking fun at any cliches it can find and the tone of the book reflects this as DaMarco, Dane Brandon and Nesmith and the rest go for it in every sense in a book that never lets up from start to finish! :D Galaxy Quest The Journey Continues is funny, slap-stick, clever and action packed! :D Highly recommended! :D Go and get! :D

Excellent Epilogue to the Feature Film

Picks up not long after the film, building on the plot device that the Omega 13 device effected more than the crew of The Protector, and caused havoc on an alien planet, altering the timeline of a civil war. Taggert and his crew are forced to deal with more aliens and go fix what they’ve unintentionally altered. Great artwork & writing. Looking for other issues now, as it ends on an open note for more adventures.

Either there was some issue about using the likenesses of the actors from the original movie, or this artist had no references to work with - worse, all the characters looked alike and it was sometimes hard to tell them apart. Still, the story was a good one (I particularly enjoyed Brandon's storyline) which made this a fairly enjoyable read.

A good parody of the Trek genre but nearly nowhere close to the movie. The plot is more like funny strange than funny ha ha

'Galaxy Quest - The Journey Continues' is a 4-issue "sequel" to the movie Galaxy Quest. The story is by Erik Burnham with art by Nacho Arranz.

When the Omega 13 is activated at the end of the Galaxy Quest movie, it has consequences on the planet Dryth where a civil war is waging between the two factions of Drythans. Before long, one of the factions is heading toward Earth to find out who set events in motion and to have them fix it. Cut to years later where we learn that the Galaxy Quest series has been reborn, and that Brandon, ubernerd and hardcore Galaxy Quest fan, has been staying in touch with the Thermians, a plot point that could prove useful. The Drythans arrive on Earth and can look like anyone, so they invade a comic convention where the Galaxy Quest cast is appearing and coerce them into helping by replacing them with lookalikes. The cast is still in over their heads, but find ways to make wisecracks, and this time Brandon finds himself along for the ride. Still it was nice to see these characters together again, and I think Erik Burnham got them right.

With only four issues, the story feels really rushed, and when the final showdown happens, it was over so fast, I was actually thinking I was missing pages. The plot is very similar to the movie, but so is the humor. The artwork was good, except, I kept getting confused with a few of the male characters, specifically Jason Nesmith and Alexander Dane. There are some pretty funny setups, but I wanted more and for the story to not feel as rushed. It seems like it's a longer ongoing story, so maybe it will even out over time.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from IDW Publishing, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

A surprise title, this – being the first sequel (that I know of, at least) to a cult hit movie from ages ago. The plot is quite the same, although a lot curter this time round when it finally gets going – aliens are here on Earth, to seek the performers in their favourite sci-fi show to right a wrong committed in the past. And so the thespians have to try and fit into their costumes in more ways than one and get intergalactic diplomacy and adventure right, or die trying. If the artwork was better (and there was certainly room for improvement) you might just about make out the people who were involved in the cinema version, and take it as a follow-on. But like I say, it's been a long time, and to many this will be a stand-alone entity – and not a fabulous one at that. It has a low level of wit, and some good beats about the repercussions of our actions, but on the whole is a bit slow to build to a head, after which it isn't exactly great either.

*I received this book as an eARC from IDW Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Galaxy Quest is one of my favorite Star Trek movies. Yes, that was a joke. But it really captured so much about Star Trek from the fandom to the cheesiness to the heart and the sci-fi. Galaxy Quest is a great movie and this comic follows those characters.

Outside of our own soloar system, there were consequences when the Omega 13 was activated. Those consequences have finally found their way back to the crew of the NSEA Protector or rather the actors playing those characters.

Just as the movie did, this comic plays with a lot of sci-fi (and specifically Star Trek) tropes and cliches. They're all done in a fun self-referential way.

This is a fun story, but I didn't think the characters looked all that much like their movie counterparts. I recommend this to fans of Galaxy Quest, especially those familiar with Star Trek. I give this graphic novel a 3.5/5.

This is a fairly good story idea where a key device that saved the day for our heroes by reversing and replaying time in the Galaxy Quest movie ended up causing problems across the solar system. The result is okay and for fans of the movie, you get to see the characters in action again. But that's about all I can say for it. Galaxy Quest set a high bar of combining humor with earnestness and poking fun at Sci Fi tropes in order to make a great movie and tell a superb story. This book tells a serviceable enough story with a few laughs that's otherwise forgettable.

Since an actual movie sequel to Galaxy Quest is highly unlikely, it's logical they want to "exploit" its popularity via a comic, since this medium has proven to be a lucrative endeavour for other movies and TV shows etc.

But quite frankly, this wasn't that great. There's a good plot idea in there, but in the end the execution is fairly flimsy.

Disappointing art as well.

The story was fine, if a bit short. Four issues isn't long for a real story. The art was nice except that it was hard to tell the male characters apart. It seemed more like a test run for a longer project. I really liked the addition of the young fanboy as a much needed engineer on the team.

The art doesn't look anything like most of the main characters, and some of the characters are hard to distinguish from the others. The story wasn't very good either. Galaxy Quest deserved better.
