The Easiest Tips for Saving Time & Money on Your Health

When it comes to wanting to live a healthy and vibrant life, the most common roadblocks are typically “too expensive,” “takes too much time”, and “it’s too hard to stay healthy on the road.” At this year’s third annual Camp Reboot, I will be talking about how you can overcome these hurdles with simple solutions, but I wanted to give you a sneak peek at some of the tips I will be sharing, so here you go! If you want to learn more, there’s still time to sign up for Camp!

SAVE TIME

  1. Batch & make juice every other day. You’ll have a grab and go option every morning!
    • Store fresh juice in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours (72 hours max).
    • Make enough juice to last you the next two days. Sunday night, make 1-2 juice recipes (i.e. 32 oz. Green and 32 oz. Red), and fill 4, 16 oz. Mason Jars. Stick to this plan and you will only have to prepare your juice Sunday, Tuesday & Friday!
    • Store under proper conditions: Fill juice to the top of your jar and seal with a screw top lid. Refrigerate immediately.  When traveling, keep in a cool, dark place (use a cooler with ice packs if you have a longer commute).
  1. Have smoothie ingredients prepped and ready to go. Place all ingredients in a gallon-sized plastic bag and have it ready to add into your blender first thing in the morning. If you have an individual sized blender, take the container with you to drink out of on your morning commute.
  1. Put your salad ingredients in a mason jar. What better way to prepare and transport a veggie rich meal that will stay fresh and iSalad in Mason Jars super easy to make (under 5 minutes)?!
    • Prepare when you are making your juice (remember you’re batch juicing the night before so all the veggies will already be out!).
    • Layer: Start with the dressing on the bottom, followed by a harder veggie or beans for the base, followed by a layer of colorful veggies, topped with leafy greens and nuts/seeds.
    • Store upright in the fridge or cooler as you transport to work/end destination.
    • Enjoy: Shake and dump out on a plate. Follow these step-by-step instructions.
  1. Get a crockpot. This will save time and money! Throw fresh or frozen ingredients in the crockpot when you leave the house in the morning, have a hot soup or protein rich meal waiting and ready when you arrive home (6-12 hours later). Try this easy crockpot stew or this slow cooker Vegan Chili.

SAVE MONEY

  1. Don’t spend your whole paycheck on healthy food.
    • Grow what you can (Mint grows like wildfire and Kale grows super quick and easy! Use these helpful tips to start planting!
    • Join a CSA Farm: Community Supported Agriculture is a way to not only get the freshest most nutrient rich produce out there, but it is way cheaper too!
    • Join a Food CoOp (a local community joined grocery store).
    • Buy frozen: Purchase frozen when produce is out of season and prices are sky high. Not only will it be cheaper, but flash freezing some produce like berries may actually be more nutrient rich than the fresh blueberries that have been in long-term storage.  Here’s more on frozen vs. fresh produce.
    • Find low cost fruits & veggies: Some produce may be at a lower price point than others such as: Carrots ($1/lb.) Celery ($2/bunch), Green Peppers ($1.29/lb), Cauliflower ($4/head), Sweet Potato ($0.50/lb.)
    • Find high juice yield fruits & veggies for High Juice Yield: If budget is a concern, instead of juicing kale (which yields a small amount of juice) try eating kale in a salad instead. Juice greens with a higher water content. Produce that gives a high juice yield include: Romaine, Cucumber, Celery, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Fennel, Tomatoes, Melons
  1. SNAP
Many farmer’s markets and retailers are selling produce that Snap Participants can purchase with their benefits. Use this helpful Toolkit to start saving.
  1. You don’t always need to go organic.
Organic generally costs more so keep in mind that you don’t always have to choose organic – conventional produce is better than no produce at all! Checkout the EWG’s Dirty Dozen list to learn where to spend money on organic and learn what “organic” actually means before you spend extra cash!

SAVE YOUR DIET ON THE ROAD

  1. Bring your juice for the drive: Make a large batch and pack in a cooler with ice packs. Fresh juice, kept cold and sealed tight can be stored for 24-48 hours (72 hrs max!)Juices in Mason Jar
  2. Find a Juice Bar on the road: Use our Juice Bar Finder to search for “healthy” or “vegetarian” in a nearby location.
  3. No Fresh Juice available? If you’ve knocked out the options above, look for a bottled juice labeled HPP (High Pressure Processing) juice. Look for juices with ingredients that indicate more veggies than fruits (sticking to the 80/20 rule).
