UK Wii U owners have been waiting for the BBC iPlayer to come to their consoles for ages - the last we heard about it was back in January last year, when the esteemed broadcasting corporation insisted that it was still working hard on making an eShop release possible.
Seemingly without warning, that time has now come - the BBC iPlayer is at long last available to download in the UK. It's got a 94MB file size and grants access to a selection of on-demand programming from what is arguably one of the world's most famous broadcasters.
The download basically replicates the functionality of the standard iPlayer Smart TV app, and allows off-TV viewing on the GamePad - something which will come in useful at those times when you're fighting with family members over what to watch. Oh, and it supports HD playback, as well.

This is great news. Waited a while for this.
Finally. HD iPlayer app on a Nintendo console.
Now just give me All4 and I'll be able to put my 360 to rest.
awesome news! it means I can browse the iplayer on the gamepad before watching it on the telly.
So TVii could still happen.
Finally! I was actually thinking about BBC iPlayer on Wii U recently as well, which is spooky.
That came out of no where. I was beginning to think it had been cancelled.
Yes, Thank you! Would be nice if other TV Channels offered their apps to Wii U like 4 on Demand and so on, but this is still very welcomed.
Very handy for Dr Who reruns.
Now you can get the biased news from your home console!
At least there's still Top Gear... oh wait.
Nice one thanks for the heads up!
@OneBagTravel
Still waiting for the ITV/Netflix announcement on that one.
UK only — just like the iPlayer is becoming/has become.
I am glad it never came to the US — because I would be bummed out about it leaving.
AFT! Thanks for the heads up. Not that I use iPlayer much currently, but it's good to know for future.
@Captain_Gonru - I think I used mine twice. Once when I first got it, and once for the first 5 minutes of a football game,1 of the Brady - Manning games I think.
But yeah, one of the most useless features ever. At least they ddn't remove it like Other OS.
That's pretty sweet! I wish the Wii U would get more music/radio apps, like Pandora and iHeartRadio.
I think I might faint! lol. Hope its been worth the wait.
ITV player would be handy too
UK only? B@st@rds! It's the same bloody story as on the Wii. We in other countries would like to view it as well you know. We're good enough in Ireland to sell all your English stations to us for our TV packages but when it comes to online we're told to f*** off. It's the same story with the telephone voting on various programmes.
THANK YOU BBC FOR RELEASING THE BBC IPLAYER NOW. NOW WE DON'T HAVE TO USE NINTENDOTVII OR EVEN CARE ABOUT NINTENDO TVII SERVICE IN THE UK! =)
@Angelic_Lapras_King YES we need more on demand service in europe
download it now, so happy
My anglophile mother would go berserk if this came to the US.
...and I wouldn't complain, either, since though I'm not as obsessed with the UK as her, I do like "Hancock's Half-Hour", "Cabin Pressure", and all that...
finished download it, now i'm trying it out
the service work perfectly and it was amazing!
Still waiting for a Pandora or Spotify app,if that ever happens...
To be fair they can't really make it available in other countries. BBC is government funded through the TV license.
im currently downloading it now
music service on the Wii U console is a great idea @Shy_Guy
Nice, although I have iPlayer on TV, phone, laptop, pc and tablet already. Would make more sense to offer this worldwide, but I guess that's licensing. No-one will give away their products for free. Has to be paid for somehow.
@Shy_Guy I agree with you as well it would be good if there was something like that
@mike_intv
nextfix did already release on wii u in 2012
PS3 has TuneIn and Spotify,why can't Nintendo have some music app?
This is bullcrap! I am here in the States and I use Unlocater so I can watch BBC and ITV. I would like the option to watch on the Wii U.
I mean I have it on my Wii, Roku, Laptop, PC and my Android tablet. But it is not fair that I can't have it on my Wii U. (sarcasm)
So we in the UK finally can pretty much get a sort of Nintendo TVii now. XD
Bloody finally!
@rjejr TVii offers nothing, you're not missing much of anything. It basically makes your Wii U a remote and basically takes out the off TV play when someone else is using the TV. The fact that people cared about this redundant, un-useful, service amazes me.
One another note... what is that Cat Mario show?
Edit
Ok, I looked it up on youtube.... I think I just became more stupid.
Awesome, has to be better than the Mac app which requires me to use a browser to find programmes before I can download them and then view them with iPlayer.
Finally, Pobol y Cwm with the subtitles on my Gamepad!
@OneBagTravel
Actually, I find BBC news to be non biased. Hence why so many right wingers accuse them of left wing bias and vice versa. Regarding Top Gear, Clarkson is the only person to blame for that. He is a man who believes he is the centre of the universe and as such, all revolves around him. What he failed to realise is, hotel staff have families, homes or lives to go back to. Walking into a hotel and punching a colleague because the kitchen is closed is unacceptable behavior. Thats not how we do things in Britain. Rather than thank his viewers for their support, maybe he should be apologising to them.
This is the BBC defence thread, right?
@freaksloan
You know you can use Unlocator or any other DNS-service with your Wii U, right?
You can just change the DNS in the internet settings of the console...
It would be nice to be able to draw on the screen to compensate for the terrible analysis that BBC have on MotD
I had BBC America for a while. I was disappointed that it had more American Shows than BBC shows on. It had Star Trek The Next Generation and X-Files for hours straight. I rarely saw Doctor Who on BBC America.
@mike_intv It's development is paid for by the TV license fee payers in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
It is of no surprise that they don't release it for other territories.
@ikki5 I'm still waiting for Nintendo to remove it's horrible icon - Infact update the row of ugly icons on their Wii U UI.
If Nintendo cut out all the poorly designed 3D transparencies and the ugly floating background they'd probably find their OS running alot faster.
@Shy_Guy Nintendo hate multimedia things.
@freaksloan Do you pay for access to the BBC and BBC iPlayer? In the UK we have to which s why it's exclusive to us.
@liveswired Yeah...
Only in UK... not interested.
Boo hoo, poor deprived Americans not getting a service WE pay for with OUR TV licences. Not like you get hundreds more TV channels than us anyway (sarcasm).
Besides, iPlayer's always had a terrible choice of shows on it anyway. What shows it DOES have often don't have every episode or are only there for certain periods. It often breaks mid-stream too, resulting in long buffering or a complete crash. Trust me, Americans, you're not missing out.
Bring this to North America so I can Binge watch Doc Martin There are other great shows to watch too. Please localize to North America.
@Windy Have fun trying to binge watch Doc Martin on BBC iPlayer. It's an ITV show, not a BBC show.
@liveswired
There was a global service for iPlayer as well that is being shuttered:
http://arstechnica.co.uk/information-technology/2015/05/bbc-iplayer-usage-falls-for-first-time-ever-global-service-shuttered/
@DEAD
That was a reference to the new deal for the former Top Gear presenters.
@mike_intv OK i just feel really stupid now. ~=(
We in the US watch BBC too
@Mega719 i know (no sarcasm) i found out about it a year ago(i think)
@Mega719 With advertising (I think you get HBO without ad's though correct ?)
Cannot believe they are closing accounts of people who choose to pay and use a VPN.
(HBO that is).
Could have done with live streaming but it's better than the iplayer the wii u had last week.
Uh, why would non-UK users get (or want) this?
Nice. Good to see that there's an easier way to watch iPlayer. Now give me Spotify or riot.
EDIT: Probably won't use this much. But hey, it's there!
@LunaticPandora Up until recently there was a subscription version you could get outside the UK. (But it is due to close or has closed).
Good news!
Good for those who dont have another console, smart TV, chromecast etc.
Downloaded it but to be honest will most likely never use it as I already have better options. Must say though, when the Wii U first came out it was my main Netflix and Amazon Prime player. Actually that's all it did for a long time because it had no games.
If only this was for the whole PAL region. Gotta catch up on Poldark!
@LunatcPandora
Poldark
FINALLY! But not that I need it on Wii U as I have SKY+ HD so I can just get BBC iPlayer on there with more on demand services including ITV Player, Sky channels catch up, Demand5 etc.
At last , been waiting so long for this. Very lazy not to make use of the touch screen. Poor design not allowing browsing on pad while a programme plays on TV. Hopefully sorted with an update. Now we need itvplayer, 4OD and demand 5 apps. Oh and a Plex, Xbmc or pleXBMC app too. Might have to wait for home brew versions I think.
Rabble, rabble, rabble! Stupid Nintendo, not releasing this in North America! We never get anything good! Rabble, rabble, rabble!
shame it keeps crashing for me and has no Wii Remote support. Would be nice to save gamepad battery by turning it off in options and using point controls. Oh well
@heathenmagic You can turn your gamepad off and use your Wii remote, if you're happy using the d-pad and a/b buttons rather than point control. Which, to be honest, is fine with me. Its a publicly funded free app after all. As long as it functions (mine hasn't crashed yet, touch wood).
