Meet the ‘King of the ‘Ring’ at its castle: Honda hosts Civic Type R event at the Nurburgring

Honda fans, it’s time to book a ticket to Deutschland.

The Japanese automaker has just announced the ‘TypeR Experience,’ a three-day event that gives fans and owners the opportunity to cozy up to the new Civic Type R in Germany.

The site of the experience is the famed Nurburgring, a track the hot hatchback is very familiar with. Earlier this month, the Type R became the fastest front-wheel drive car to lap the circuit with a time of 7:50.63.

The TypeR Experience, which runs from May 15th to the 17th, costs €175 ($191) per person and includes camping accommodations in a souvenir tent, food and drinks throughout the weekend, a tour of the Castrol Honda Garage, and a VIP pass to the ADAC Zurich 24-hour Race. The competition signifies the first time ever that a round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship has taken place at the Nurburgring.

More valuable for enthusiasts, though, is the chance to take the Type R around the ‘Ring in a once-in-a-lifetime motoring escapade. But there’s a catch: You have to supply your own Type R.

Honda has set up a website where participants can register, but you’d better hurry because registration ends April 17th.

Honda recently announced that it will begin importing British-built Civic hatchbacks to the United States, but it’s unlikely that the Type R will be among them.

Some of the brand’s VTEC Turbo four-cylinders will eventually see American shores, however, though specifics about which units will show up are still unknown. Rumor has it that the next-generation Civic will equip a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine.

The turbocharged, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine found in Honda's CR-V and Civic models, two of America's best-selling cars, has a fuel leakage problem, according to industry watchdog Consumer Reports. The Japanese automaker has quietly extended the powertrain warranty of over one million cars to reassure owners that they won't need to cover an expensive repair bill if they encounter a mechanical problem.

The issue is seemingly limited to CR-Vs made during the 2017 and 2018 model years, and Civics manufactured between the 2016 and 2018 model years. Consumer Reports published a memo Honda sent to its American dealers that blames the problem on software settings or hardware failures, without providing additional information. Owners of affected cars will be able to tell that they have a problem right away; the defect causes cars to misfire, lose power, and run more loudly than usual. It might trigger a check engine light, and some owners have even complained that their car stalled, which can lead to a hazardous situation. The last thing you want is your car turning off when you're turning left across a busy road.
