Vietnam National University delegates to visit OSU

Tuesday, July 21, 2015

Vietnam National University delegates will visit the Oklahoma State University Stillwater campus this week for the first time in nearly 10 years.

VNU, located in Ho Chi Minh City, has shown interest in reviewing its partnership with OSU, as well as looking into new partnership opportunities with the School of Hotel and Restaurant Administration in the College of Human Sciences.

Duong Anh Duc, the newly appointed VNU vice president of international affairs, will lead a contingent of four representatives to Oklahoma July 22. The group will visit OSU, as well as the State Regents and the University of Central Oklahoma. Other members of the delegation include Dr. Truong Quang Duoc, Dr. Le Thanh Long and Tran Thi Ngo, who are representatives of International Education Institute.

Tim Huff, manager of the International Students and Scholars office at OSU, said the university has had a special relationship with VNU. The IEI concentrates on the placement of Vietnamese transfer students into universities in the U.S.

“Over the past decade, they have placed hundreds of students into OSU and UCO,” Huff said. “The numbers have dropped in recent years, but there is now a national push in the development of Vietnam’s hospitality industry. The delegation is showing a renewed interest in our school, specifically the Hotel and Restaurant Administration program.”

OSU’s Hotel and Restaurant program is consistently ranked as one of the best hospitality programs. The Journal of Culinary Science & Technology ranked OSU No. 3 in the world for 2012. The program is recognized for is student experiential learning.

“International students are not allowed to work off campus,” Huff said. “So this is huge that we, as a school, can offer ways for students to get their practical experience on campus via the West Side Café, Taylor’s Dining Room, the Distinguished Chef Series and the Wine Forum of Oklahoma."

The delegation will tour the Stillwater campus and meet with Huff, as well as Dr. Ben Goh, assistant dean of the College of Human Sciences and director of HRAD, and Dr. David Henneberry, associate vice president of the International Studies and Outreach program.

Huff believes the partnership with Vietnam National University will complement and enhance the current HRAD Two Plus Two program, where students complete two years of education in their home university and then the next two years abroad.

“The students need the first two years in their own country because we require them to take certain prerequisites such as English classes,” Huff said. “Before they can come to OSU, they need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language exam and meet OSU admission requirements.”

The delegates will arrive in Stillwater July 22 and leave July 24. For more information about VNU, visit vnu.edu.vn/eng.
