PESHAWAR: Nine people were injured when a rickshaw rammed into barbed wires placed in front of protesting shopkeepers who were gathered on GT Road on Saturday.

The shopkeepers were protesting against the robbery of 500 tolas of gold from a jewellery shop on Asamai Road near Ander Sheher in the morning of the same day.

“They (the robbers) had come on motorbikes and managed to escape with the loot,” a shopkeeper told The Express Tribune. “Our sense of insecurity is increasing by the day due to such robberies happening in broad day light in busy markets.”

The men who were armed with pistols entered Moti Jewellers in the morning and held the shopkeepers hostage at gunpoint. They collected jewellery and drove towards GT Road without inviting much attention.

Later in the day, around 2pm, the agitated jewellers from Ander Sheher gold market blocked GT Road in protest, demanding the arrest of the robbers and recovery of the stolen jewellery. They took barbed wire from the side of the road, placed there by the police, and took it to the middle of the road, however, a rickshaw rammed into the wires during the protest, injuring nine people.

Those who remained unhurt held the rickshaw driver and physically assaulted him. The agitated protesters were about to lynch the driver when the police arrived at the site and took him into custody.

Upon reassurances from the police of the robbers’ arrest, the protesters dispersed.
