BBC execs are said to be in discussions over a revamp of the iconic music chart show with a new look and format.

"Top of the Pops is a great brand name and the BBC are keen to use it. Some at the highest level are massive supporters of the plan and have given the go-ahead," a source told The Mirror.

The programme could be "the perfect tie-in" with the Radio 1 charts show which has recently moved from Sunday nights to Friday.

Together Top of the Pops and the radio charts show would be "a brilliant start to the weekend", the source added.

It is believed that the new-look Top of the Pops would feature former X Factor presenter Dermot O'Leary and ex-Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton as hosts.

Fearne was one of the show's last hosts and continued to present the Top of the Pops Christmas specials after the show was taken off the air in 2006.

Dermot, 41, announced he was leaving X Factor this year after a decade as a host on the reality TV talent contest.

His departure comes amid news that Simon Cowell is shaking up the format of the show following declining ratings. Dermot already presents a Radio 2 programme showcasing new and emerging bands with live sessions.

Meanwhile, Fearne bid farewell to Radio 1 in February after 10 years with the station for "family and new adventures". The 33-year-old presenter is expecting her second child with Wood.

A spokesperson for the BBC, “There are no current plans to bring back Top Of The Pops, however Radio 1 will continue to be the home of the Official Chart, with a new CBBC Chart programme starting in May.”

Top of the Pops left our screens in 2006 after a 42-year run due to the changing media landscape and music fans increasingly resorting to streaming and downloading music content.
