March Madness 2015: Multiple Arrests Made in Georgia for Alleged Gambling

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

Many will fill out brackets and place wagers across the United States in conjunction with the 2015 NCAA men's college basketball tournament, but police made sure that wouldn't be the case in Alpharetta, Georgia, on Monday night.

Twenty-three people were detained and charged with illegal gambling relating to March Madness following the raid of an Alpharetta restaurant, according to Mike Morris of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Alpharetta police spokesman George Gordon described the circumstances surrounding the bust, per Morris.

"Alpharetta authorities had previously gathered intelligence regarding the planned operation of a large gambling event," Gordon said. "Tonight, authorities moved against the gambling operation and detained approximately 65 people."

Forty-two of the people taken into custody were released. Also, police recovered both money and firearms during the raid, according to Good Day Atlanta on Twitter:

It is unclear what type of gambling was allegedly taking place, as it has yet to be determined if a bracket pool was being held or if individual games were being bet on.

Few sporting events are more popular than the NCAA tournament, and while that inevitably leads to gambling across the nation, the city of Alpharetta took steps to ensure that it will be the exception rather than the rule.
