Jacqueline Fernandez’s sartorial choices have always been reflective of her personality. Never one to maintain a serious expression while posing for the paparazzi, the Sri Lankan native has made a name for herself in Bollywood since her debut in 2009, having starred in popular films like Housefull (2010) and Race 2 (2013). Over her time in the Indian film industry, the 34-year-old star hasn’t shied away from experimenting with her wardrobe, and has made it to best dressed lists several times.

Fernandez debuted on the film scene with Aladin in 2009. The next few years kept her busy with plenty of new releases, including Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai (2010), Housefull (2010), Murder 2 (2011), Housefull 2 (2012), Race 2 (2013), Ramaiya Vastavaiya (2013), Kick (2014), Roy (2015), Bangistan (2015) and Definition of Fear (2015). In 2016, the star was spotted on the big screen in multiple films like Housefull 3, Dishoom and A Flying Jatt, and in 2017, she also starred in Judwaa 2. Fernandez was also seen a judge in a reality dance show on TV, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, that year. Since then, the actor has made a special appearance in the remake of the song ‘Ek Do Teen’ in Baaghi 2 (2018). Continuing the Race franchise, she essayed Jessica Gomes in Race 3 (2018). This year, in May 2019, Fernandez was seen in another music video in the Shraddha Kapoor-starrer, Saaho. The star is currently working on a Netflix project called Drive.
Just like her transition in reel life, her style has evolved drastically in real life too. She’s not just maintained her chirpy persona, but mastered the art of keeping things cheerful through her wardrobe too.
Style files
Fernandez’s first years in Bollywood saw her stepping out in a variety of statement dresses, from midis to maxis. One of her most striking looks from 2009 was a black strapless satin dress accentuated with a snake skin-print panel. In 2010, the star made her first appearance at 11th International Indian Film Academy Awards ceremony in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where she won the Star Debut of the Year – Female award. For the occasion, she eschewed a gown in favour of a white concept sari, featuring a strappy blouse, and long strings of beads instead of a fabric pallu.
Come 2011, neutral blouses and pants started to win Fernandez’s favour for casual days out. For evenings on the red carpet, embellished dresses like that blue and gold Matthew Williamson number remained her go-to. She also made a memorable appearance at Riteish Deshmukh’s reception in a striking yellow A-line kurta + beige pants combination by Anand Kabra in 2012.
For Fernandez, 2013 was the year of trying out new labels. She was spotted in everything from a bubblegum pink Pernia Qureshi gown to a regal Sabyasachi couture ensemble. She took things one step forward in 2014 too, shuttling between form-fitted creations and ethnic ensembles. Her pre-draped navy blue Manish Malhotra sari serves as a good example of her style during this time. The star also won the Best Style Icon award at an awards ceremony that year, for which she wore a bold red Amit Aggarwal creation with a dramatic, oversized bow on its back.
In 2015, Fernandez wore an Anamika Khanna outfit for the first time to the IIFA Awards—a look that can easily be considered as one of her best thus far. The next year, the star was seen embracing her Sri Lankan roots with a traditional lavender sari. In contrast, stripes and pleated skirts seemed to reign supreme in her wardrobe in 2016, along with decadent outfits such the black Anamika Khanna creation and the rani pink brocade sari she wore for Diwali.
2017 saw the star continuing with her dichotomous aesthetic—she’d either be spotted in romantic feminine styles, athleisure outfits or bold ensembles. The range spanned from a blush pink Dar Sara gown to a colour-coded Anamika Khanna ensemble in vibrant shades of yellow, purple and red.
