SUNNYVALE — After only three months, a young man became the 10th fatality on Caltrain tracks this year — matching the total number of fatalities involving the commuter train in all of 2014.

At this same time last year, there were only three such fatalities.

A “preliminary investigation indicates that this was an intentional act,” Caltrain spokesman Will Reisman said of the victim who was hit at 11:39 a.m. Sunday by train No. 426, on the southbound tracks, just north of Mary Avenue.

Reisman said about 100 passengers were aboard the train at the time of the incident and were able to get off at the Sunnyvale station. No injuries were reported.

At least 94 suicide attempts were stopped in the past three years on Caltrain’s 77 miles of tracks, according to the railroad.

The identity of Sunday’s victim was not released immediately. Authorities estimated he was 20 years old.

For the passengers traveling between the Mountain View and Sunnyvale stations, Caltrain provided bus passage, Reisman said, because the involved train’s service was terminated.

However, by 1:10 p.m., trains were given the clearance to move on a single track between the California Avenue and Lawrence stations.

Reisman noted that the No. 428 train was delayed by about 35 minutes at the Mayfield station, and the No. 431 was delayed 26 minutes at Menlo Park.

A third train, the No. 802, was delayed 11 minutes in Mountain View.
