PNoy rules out running for another elective post

President Benigno Aquino III is not keen on running for another elective when he steps down as the country's chief executive by June 2016.

“The deadline has passed to file a certificate [of candidacy],” Aquino said in jest during the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines’ (Focap) annual presidential forum held in Parañaque City.

“I think it’s clear. I cannot run in 2016 and I have no plans yet for 2019,” he said.

Aquino said one reason he doesn’t want to run for an elective position anymore is the sacrifices of his staff who was with him since his congressional days until his presidency.

“I make a decision like that and I have to bring all of these people,” he said.

Aquino’s predecessor, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, ran and won as congressman of Pampanga’s second district in 2010. Former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada, meanwhile, is now the incumbent city mayor of Manila. — Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez/RSJ, GMA News
