1. Wednesday’s Child

DCI Banks wades in on the case of a missing 11 year old who was abducted by fake social workers who turned up at his front door. DS Annie Cabbot returns from maternity leave and struggles to look after the case as it gets darker and darker.

It’s eventually uncovered that the child was killed by a heroin overdose and suddenly DCI Banks and his team are digging into the drugs underworld of the Elthorpe estate.

The boy’s headmaster becomes the prime suspect, and Banks and Cabbot get close as he tries to protect the new mother from the harrowing aspects of the case. It’s the start of their blossoming romance.

2. Piece of my Heart

A journalist is found dead and the ever savvy DCI finds a connection between the death and a mysterious one from the 80s.

The victim’s dad is a former senior police officer and DI Helen Morton thinks he’s blocking the investigation. Banks reopens the 80s case as he suspects a cover-up.

But he discovers that the confession of the guy who went to prison for the crime has disappeared, and DI Morton starts to think his father has much more to do with his death than originally thought.

3. Bad Boy

Club DJ Richard Martin is forced off the road and shot in the head. The gun turns up in the bedroom of Erin Doyle, who is the daughter of Banks’ neighbours.

He tries to cover it up, but DI Morton gets involved and the neighbours’ house is raided, and Erin’s father is tasered which results in a heart attack.

DI Morton is then under investigation for her actions by Annie, while Banks discovers the identity of the killer – his daughter’s boyfriend.
