The goal of this project was to create a package design for a product that would cost less than 75 cents, but could retail for more. I chose spice because I wanted to create a packaging where the spice would not have to sit in the cabinet for years to come. My solution was to package the spice in packs of four for retail value but in quantities of 2 tablespoons each. The spices could be used once or twice and then thrown away. The other important part of my packaging is that each box comes with a recipe on the back. The front has a tab that is perforated and pulls open. This allows consumers to view the recipe while cooking.

However, as you can see there is more than just spice packaging here. I expanded this project to also have extracts and created a business identity for the company. The packaging for the extracts is similar because of the stand, typography, and recipe on the back. All the products for this line not only have the pull out stand, but each packaging has subtle background illustrations, representing what is being sold. The Indian spices have drawings based on India, the Italian on Italian, and so on.

The type for the titles and various names is hand lettered.

What’s Unique?
Most spice packaging is large plastic containers of one spice that you will never use. That is what makes the Marco’s Kitchen Spices so unique is that they are broken down into a one time use quantity and then can be thrown away. Furthermore, it is extremely convenient that they are packaged in cuisines with spices that work well together.

The second unique feature on the whole line is the pull out frame. Each package, including the extracts, has a perforated pull out frame so that the consumer can easily view their recipe they got with the package.
