Students Vote at Hendrick Hudson

Food and fun on the ballot for elementary kids

Hendrick Hudson’s elementary school students had a real-life lesson in democracy, letting their votes count along with their parents’ at the annual District Budget Vote on May 19th.

Furnace Woods School students cast ballots for an upcoming theme day. The choices were Crazy Hair/Hat Day or Sports Jersey Day. “Students truly saw that every vote counts as Crazy Hair/Hat Day won by only two votes,” said Principal Dr. Cindy Kramer. “As a result, on Friday, June 12, Furnace Woods will be abuzz with wild hats and hairdos!”

For Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School, food was the focus. “We voted on a special lunch,” reported Principal Joshua Cohen. “Hamburger sliders beat out cheese lasagna and chicken parmesan. Everyone is looking forward to this delicious meal!”

And at the Frank G. Lindsey School, where the District Budget Vote actually took place in the gymnasium, food was again on the ballot. “We voted on our favorite lunch,” said Principal Donna Torrisi. “Breakfast for lunch won!”

In the main event, District voters also approved the budget, the bus referendum, and the separate budget for the Hendrick Hudson Library.
