Don’t believe LP demolition job, Binay tells bishops

Vice President Jejomar Binay has appealed to the influential Catholic Church not to believe the supposed "demolition by perception" being allegedly conducted against him by his political detractors.

In an eight-page letter to several bishops, Binay said the investigation against him "only intends to influence perception. This is not about justice or the fight against corruption."

The letter was dated June 5 but was only received by the bishops last week, days after Binay resigned as a member of President Benigno Aquino III's Cabinet, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said Tuesday.

“This pattern of lies and web of deceits orchestrated by my political detractors, who are fueled by their political ambitions, were designed to bring me down as I am the vital obstacle to the ruling party’s ambition to dominate the 2016 elections and continue their regime of incompetence, aimless leadership, large-scale corruption, selective justice, and indifference to the poor,” Binay said.

Binay had earlier challenged the ruling Liberal Party to face him in the 2016 national elections instead attacking him and his family.

The CBCP said Binay answered point-by-point the allegations raised against him in the investigation of the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee, which had since recommended the filing of plunder charges against him and several city officials.

Binay and his son, Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, have been named respondents in plunder and graft complaints in connection with the alleged overpricing in the construction of the Makati City Hall Building II and a Makati Science High School building.

The CBCP earlier called on the voters to “reject the notoriously corrupt” but warned of easily being swayed by “spin doctors.” —Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez/KBK, GMA News
