Police in La Vergne arrested a 42-year-old man accused of dragging a dog with his car and running over the animal.

The La Vergne Police Department sent out a media release that said officers went to the man's home after a witness called police and recorded the event.

Timothy Sams of La Vergne was taken to the Rutherford County jail after being arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty and resisting arrest.

The La Vergne Police Department received a call around 11 a.m. Sunday about a man dragging a dog with his car.

Police said a motorist who saw the incident called police, followed the car and recorded what was happening for evidence.

"The complainant had followed Sams to his home and had stood by until officers arrived," said a La Vergne Police Department news release sent out Monday afternoon. "Once there, Sams refused to come to the door. After about 80-90 minutes, Sams came out of the house, but then resisted arrest when officers took him into custody."

La Vergne police said the dog is in the care of Rutherford PAWS,a pet adoption and welfare service, at 285 John R. Rice Blvd. in Murfreesboro, and likely suffers from at least one broken leg.
