French TV Cast, Olympians Killed In Mid-Air Helicopter Crash In Argentina

At least eight of the 10 passengers killed in the collision were French nationals involved in the reality television show Dropped. Champion sailor Florence Arthaud, Olympic swimmer Camille Muffat, and Olympic boxer Alexis Vastine were among those killed.

Two helicopters flying over a remote area of northwest Argentina collided in mid-air Monday, killing everyone on board both crafts, authorities said.

Among the 10 people killed in the crash, were the cast and crew of a French reality TV show, Dropped, featuring several ex-Olympians.

The helicopters were flying near Villa Castelli in La Rioja province, the Associated Press reported.

La Rioja Secretary of Security Cesar Angulo said there were no survivors, the AP reported.

"An explosion occurred and it's believed that they must have collided," Angulo said. "Aeronautical experts will have to determine that."

The first season was filmed in Mexico, Alaska, the Malaysian jungle, and Namibia's Skeleton Coast, according to the industry website Television Business International.

Shooting for the second season of Dropped began in late February in Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina in Patagonia, and then moved to La Rioja, The Guardian reported.

The cast for Dropped included soccer star Sylvain Wiltord, boxer Alexis Vastine, cyclist Jeannie Longo, sailor Florence Arthaud, snowboarder Anne-Flore Marxer, skater Philippe Candeloro, and swimmers Alain Bernard and Camille Muffat, Le Parisien reported.

Authorities released a list of the deceased provided by the production company for Dropped, which includes Arthaud, Muffat, and Vastine.

Also involved in the crash were two Argentine pilots, Juan Carlos Castillo and Roberto Abate, and five French members of the production team — director Laurent Sbasnik, journalist Lucie Mei-Dalby, producer Volodya Guinard, cameraman Brice Guilbert, and sound engineer Edouard Gilles — who all worked for Adventure Line Productions, according to Le Monde.

Boxer Alexis Vastine, 28, won a bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics at Light Welterweight and also competed at the 2012 London Games.

Florence Arthaud, 57, was a champion long-distance yachtswoman.

In 1990, Arthaud won the Route du Rhum transatlantic sailing race single-handed.

Swimmer Camille Muffat, 25, was a three-time Olympic medalist.

At Muffat's first swim club in Nice, members put up photos in her honor.

Fellow swimmer Bernard was reportedly eliminated in the first round of the show and was not on board at the time of the crash.

Wiltord, Marxer, and other cast members were also reportedly not involved in the crash, as they were elsewhere at the time.

Wiltord tweeted of his sadness after hearing the news:

Je suis triste pour mes amis , je tremble , je suis horrifié , je n'ai pas de mots , je ne veux rien dire #Tristesse #Pleurs #JesuisàParis

"I am sad for my friends, I shake, I am horrified, I don't have words, I don't want to say anything," he wrote.

He also posted an all-black image to Instagram, along with the caption that said he is in mourning.

French President François Hollande paid tribute to those killed.
