Chipotle's Guacamole Is Just, Like, Regular Guacamole

Chipotle has released its heretofore secret guacamole recipe just in time for Cinco de Mayo.

Everybody be cool: Chipotle's new guacamole recipe is online, but it's nothing to get excited about. The recipe, which has been pared down for the home cook, includes six standard ingredients: avocados, lime juice, cilantro, red onion, jalapeño, and salt.

It is only slightly different from the most-shared recipe for guacamole online in that it does not contain tomatoes.

At most Chipotle locations across the country, the addition of guacamole to menu items — including burritos and tacos — means an additional charge of about $2. When customers order it, the cashier is known to explicitly explain the extra charge, making the addition of guacamole to a meal at Chipotle a somewhat loaded interaction. When Hillary Clinton ordered the guacamole at a recent incognito visit to the chain, she caused quite a stir.

Despite its simplicity, Chipotle's guacamole recipe has stunned the internet. MTV called "winning," while Jezebel offered some ways to spice up the standard recipe. Fox wondered, "Will people [start] smuggling in their homemade version to avoid restaurant charges?" Meanwhile, Time pointed out the high caloric content in each serving.

Want to make it? Here's the recipe for Chipotle's guacamole:

2 ripe Hass avocados (In the restaurant, we use 48 per batch, multiple times per day)
2 tsp lime juice
2 tbsp cilantro (chopped)
1/4 cup red onion (finely chopped)
1/2 jalapeño, including seeds (finely chopped)
1/4 tsp kosher salt

1. Choose the right avocado. It should feel squishy yet firm (like the palm of your hand), and be a nice dark green color on the inside.
2. Cut the avocado in half and the remove the pit (carefully!)
3. Scoop the avocados and place in a medium bowl.
4. Toss and coat with lime juice.
5. Add the salt and using a fork or potato masher, mash until a smooth consistency is achieved.
6. Fold in the remaining ingredients and mix well.
7. Taste the guacamole (over and over) and adjust seasoning if necessary.
