Whiplash stars Miles Teller as a young jazz drummer drilled to perfection by his violent music teacher (played by JK Simmons). Speaking to Henry Barnes at last year’s Cannes film festival, writer-director Damien Chazelle explains why he was interested in exploring the theme of artists who ruin their lives to get better at their job. Simmons describes how the internet is making us all amateur artists, and destroying perfectionism in the process
