Vent presents | Region Free | BoomTown Fair | We Love Jungle Awards | Hotflush

BoomTown Fair, Winchester

The carnivalesque festival returns, romping and raving from strength to strength with its frenetic mash-up of genres. The inspiringly bonkers atmosphere is due to the vibrantly themed zones, the wild fancy dress, the eclectic and bizarre array of entertainment, and the explosively diverse lineup. Dancehall generals such as Cutty Ranks and Barrington Levy rub shoulders with Malian superstars Amadou & Mariam and Songhoy Blues, for example. Kate Tempest features in the dance area, while Goldie, Loefah’s Swamp 81 posse, hardcore legends such as DJ Sy and a 10-hour takeover by Mr Scruff and Norman Jay are among an array of jungle, techno, dub, grime, hip-hop, hardtek and psytrance.

Matterly Estate, Sat & Sun

GTDC

Vent presents, London

Aaron Siegel spreads the gospel of Detroit more evangelistically than most. With his FIT label and distribution outfit, he’s helped lob records from Carl Craig, Theo Parrish, and Omar S’s labels into racks across the world, while his cockle-warming house tracks are rich with the city’s DIY spirit. Take Enter The Fog, where jazzy organs get beckoned into a smoke-filled sweatbox, or Tonite, whose piano riff sounds as if it’s played on a mildewed street piano but still slays. He’s joined here by Willie Burns, proprietor of NYC’s The Thing, less a record shop and more a cratedigger’s dreamscape. Burns, too, is a man of hyphenate talents, heading up the great WT Records label and putting out his own tracks under a bunch of aliases (his own name yields the most beautifully cut gems, such as Windows Down or his tropical rain shower of a L.I.E.S release). An unmissable subterranean voyage.

Region Free, Glasgow

Part of the Glasgow electronic music scene’s charm comes from close-knit institutions championing local talent for many years; there’s no such thing as a one-hit wonder. One young label coming through with a studied appreciation of the old, while moulding something exciting and new, is All Caps. This student radio show-turned-label and DJ crew have been tipped by those in the know since their first release from house producer Alex Coulton in 2011, and are distributed by lauded local record store Rubadub. After core DJ Bake got himself a prestigious late-night slot on Rinse FM, the All Caps sound began to spread worldwide – and bagged some impressive names for the growing roster, too, such as Julio Bashmore and Kowton’s Ekranoplan project. This global outlook is behind their newest signee, Vancouver house producer and Mood Hut affiliate Flørist, who heads to Glasgow for his Phenomena EP launch alongside Local Artist and All Caps DJs, including Bake, breathing deep between steady, low-slung techno and meditative deep house.

We Love Jungle Awards, London

This awards ceremony has foregone canapes, tuxedos and dubious collaborations between musicians who had to Google each other before going on stage, in favour of a gigantic rave. While there are prizes for labels, DJs, MCs and “biggest jungle personality”, hopefully they won’t distract too much from General Levy and Ragga Twins bringing their ravaged larynxes to bear on old-school rollers, alongside pop-junglism from David Boomah and Serial Killaz. Legends such as Randall and Nicky Blackmarket are also on hand, alongside a supporting cast longer than a Gwyneth acceptance speech.

The Qube Project, SW1, Fri

Hotflush, Manchester

Hotflush Recordings has come a long, strong way from its heritage in the once-emerging UK bass scene, having seen occasionally divisive but visionary label head Paul Rose, better known as Scuba, gradually nudging the imprint into head-rushing techno territory. Despite anthemic releases by the likes of Paul Woolford and Locked Groove, its output tends to tastefully straddle the line between festival-ready domination and textured, intimate production. Expect both shades at this Sunday party.
