Emirates will soon be the proud provider of the longest scheduled commercial flight in the world, with new service between Dubai and Panama City, Panama. The route, which will cover some 8,588 miles, beats out Qantas' Sydney to Dallas route by just 11 miles.

Starting February 1, 2016, the UAE-based airline will use a twin-engine Boeing 777-200LR, which has a range over 11,800 miles, the longest of any commercial jet. Heading west, the daily non-stop flight, to be dubbed EK251, will take 17 hours and 35 minutes (despite what Google Maps thinks). The flight back to Dubai, EK252, will leave Panama City at 10:10 pm and arrive in Dubai at 10:55 the next day.

At least Emirates is good about providing lots of free movies, even for lowly economy passengers.
