Upstate NY man, woman fighting in roadway hit by car, killing him

An Upstate New York man was killed and a woman was critically injured when they were struck by a vehicle as they fought in a roadway, police say.

Dead is Kenneth J. Seiferheld, 66, of Pleasant Valley in Dutchess County. Nelly Umpierre, 53, of Pleasant Valley was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

New York State Police said they received a report of two people "fighting in the roadway" on Route 44 in Pleasant Valley at about 9 p.m. Friday. Troopers received a second report a short while later that a vehicle hit the two people.

"Weather conditions consisting of heavy rain and dense fog were contributing factors to the crash," police said in a statement.

Katherine Marriott, 24, of Clinton Corners, the driver of a Volkswagen that hit the couple, stopped after the collision. She wasn't ticketed, police said.

Police did not say what sparked the argument between the two. Troopers said the investigation is continuing.
