Sarah Connolly's Christmas playlist

This article is more than 9 years old

Mezzo Sarah Connolly shares her festive playlist, with a sublime selection of vocal music old and new

Singing belongs to Christmas like tawny port cries out for a sweet, nutty cheddar, so naturally all of my choices are vocal. I adore Christmas-time, and especially the Carols from King’s BBC broadcast which always introduces new compositions and stunning arrangements of traditional carols. I breathe a sigh of relief though when I hear Sir David Willcocks’ descant to Hark the Herald Angels Sing, as his is the best. Britten’s Ceremony of Carols is my favourite of all Christmas music and there is no better recording than that by The Sixteen. My final playlist choice is divinely silly and should be danced to with a glass of bubbly, goodies made by my wonderful chef sister, and lots of children, on Christmas morning.

Sarah Connolly sings Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde at the Royal Opera House until 21 December. She tours with the Britten Sinfonia in Journeys in 20th century American musicfrom 17 to 21 January 2015.
