Today, Google finally updated the News & Weather app, that they introduced back in the Eclair/Froyo days. Yes, it’s that long since that app saw an update. Most of us have probably forgotten about it by now, but it looks like Google hasn’t completely forgotten. As they have updated the app today with a huge overhaul. You may remember back at Google I/O when Google announced Material Design along with Android L, well the Google News & Weather app is now using material design, and damn it looks good. In addition to Material Design, we’ve also got some Google Now-style cards in the app. Which also make it look great.
Google has also added a few new widgets to the app in this update. It’s an app that many of us probably haven’t opened in years, as it really never got any updates, until now. Although there are plenty of other news and weather apps out there to choose from, it’s still nice to see the Google one getting an update to be relevent again. While the update does look great, I’m not sure that I’ll be using it, as I still use a few other news apps, and use Google Now for weather these days. What about the rest of you?
The update should be in the Play Store now. If it says that your device is not compatible, give it a few, as it is rolling out slowly. At the time of writing this, it was not compatible with my LG G3, the Kyocera Brigadier or the HTC Desire 816. But it was compatible with things like the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet. So it looks like it’s anything running Android 4.4 and above. So like we stated already, if it says it’s not compatible yet, just give it a few and it should be compatible.
