I'm a confessed readaholic and romantic junkie. I spend time juggling a busy career as an IT professional and author. In between staring at a computer screen I, enjoy living the Gold Coast life with my very tolerant husband and two school aged children. (I'm often in trouble for spending way too much time at my computer!).

I love nothing more than spending time with family and friends, hitting the beach, cooking, working out and curling up with a good book. My pet hates are cleaning and anything else that can be considered "domestic dullness". If I could have one wish it would be to be able to fit 48 hours into 24.

I tend to write what I like to read books that have the following characteristics:

" Strong characters with lots of development
" Hot romance
" Deep storylines
" Interesting settings
" Real life problems and sensible solutions
" Happily Ever Afters (massive sucker for a good HEA)

Above all, I like to be immersed in the story. Therefore, I want my books to give you the same feeling when you read them. I want you to experience the rollercoaster emotions but end up feeling better and entertained for reading the book. I want you be happy!

I love connecting with my readers. Please sign up to my newsletter and follow me on social media.

Happy Reading

This is for me a total surprise! I love the characters and their story. Quite different and very uplifting book. Do not be fooled by the description. This is much more than a some fighter and would-be model. This is such a beautiful story that even some of the shortcomings, could not have made me think about it bad.

"To be worthy to stand by your side I have to walk the same line that I’ve asked of you.”

***Quick Review:***

Series: The first in the Oni Fighters series.
Grade: Contemporary and Sports Romance.
Main characters: Xander Todd is a professional MMA fighter. One battle that ended with the tragic death changed his fate. Eden Sommers had the opportunity to be a world-class model. The fire changed her plans for life forever.
Secondary characters: A lot excellent characters. Xander best friends Dane and Seth. Eden sisters Sophia and Tori. And her best friend Beth. They're all doing a great team in this book.
Steamy: Yes.
Sensitive topic: Yes.
Love triangle:
Cheating:
Cliffhanger:
HEA:

For who I would recommend? For someone who like emotional book with lots of sport and quite hot scenes.

***

About the plot: These two characters have a lot of experience in survival. Xander currently runs the Onigashima Fighters school and all his energy is focused on their students. On a normal day in the cafe he meets a girl who once caused that he saw beauty. Eden after five years after the tragedy that met her, she still can not cope with life. The fire left scars on her face and body. She's trying to get back to life, studying at uni, but sees how people look at her and hiding from them.

When she meets Xander, she is surprised that he is not responding to her scars. He encourages her to visit his school. When Eden has enough of her own fear, and decides to do something, recklessly get into more trouble. It a little opens her eyes and she decides to learn self-defense with Xander. He always been charmed by Eden and none of scars will change that. He quickly realizes that there is more and wants to get to know her better.

Some thoughts: The book is like a little divided into two parts. The first is more about Eden, and her experiences in live with marks. The second more about Xan fighting with his own demons. The story shows in every stage as their relationship develops, their commitment to each other and building a chemistry and self-confidence, which explodes in hot scenes. One of the most important things for me to book been good are the secondary characters. And in this book they are terrific. I totally love them and I could about each of them read the book. And yes, I adore Sophia!

“Oh My God! Go Sensei! I wondered if he walked on water, now I know for sure he does. How he managed to get you naked in that space of time is a fricking miracle.”

I understand that it might be in some moments for someone who is not very interested in sport boring. There is pretty much of precise descriptions about the preparations and the fight itself. What for me is amazing, but remember that sports romances is one of my favorites.

Another thing is that there are some shortcomings in the story, as those of her family. I have several times of rolling my eyes. Some dialogues could've been shorter. Generally book could be more dynamic. It is quite long. So I had a few problems with the book, but none of them at the very end was really important.

The point is that it is not only a beautiful story of love but fight and being brave. Bullying in the network and not only is a terrible thing. It broke my heart but also raised the spirits with the support and love they gave themselves. So yes, it was a little cliché. But you just want to be more brave in your life after this.

“I guess that’s the thing I’ve learned about love, Xan. It makes you want to do things you don’t think you’re capable of, or even want to, for someone else."

Next in the series? Yes! It will be Dane's story. I can only say, I can not wait!

**Brave generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**

Brave comes as my first title from Natalie Gayle. The cover and blurb intrigued me on Netgalley and alas here we are. I really liked this author's story telling - it was easy to follow with dialogue that seemed to pop right off the pages as if you could hear the characters talking. The structure of the story felt interesting to me as we learned a lot of intricacies right off the bat about the heroine. The hero's more aloof through the first half in terms of his growth. What I loved about this style was that we really got to feel the connection Xander had for Eden because he was in tune with her needs.

Xander and Eden both carry demons as the blurb suggests. Brave is told from the points of view of both main characters, alternating within chapters. At times I found this hard to follow as I would get wrapped in one and then other would start. However, in terms of the characters there was no mystery to what plagued them emotionally which I found appealing because the author didn't play any games. It's truly a story of them coming together to calm each other, heal each other, and ultimately find love within each other. There's a lot to learn about each of them for the reader but really they learn about themselves through each other - a plot device I really enjoy.

Somewhere in the middle I did get a little off track with Brave as I felt the story started to drag. It's quite long compared to other books of it's likeness and I think I got lost in some details. There were a few times I found myself skimming.

Overall, this is a sweet, contemporary romance story that I enjoyed reading. I'd consider reading more of the series and this author's other titles. For those of you who love fighters and women who are overcoming emotional obstacles I think you'll enjoy Brave.

YOU GUYS!

I'm in love.

I considered not writing a review for this, because I seriously do not want to share Xander with anyone. But this is the first MMA romance that pressed all my buttons in the right way, and it needs to be experienced.

You know how my last review of an MMA romance was all "woe is me, I am never going to find an MMA romance that I like" ?

WELL, everything I have been missing in MMA romances, I found in this bad boy.

This had all the things that I love. It had a broken heroine, a hot as hell hero, it had a tiny amount of drama that was enough to spur the story on, but not enough to bring the drama llama out, it had a love story, it had character growth and progression and it had one hell of a happy ending.

First things first. I had no idea that this was set in Australia, or written by an Australian author when I requested it on netgalley. But what a pleasant surprise! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!

This book. I devoured it. I really did.

Eden. What a character. When we meet her, she is a broken shell of a person. She is scarred from a fire. She is skittish. She is withdrawn. She barely ever goes outside the house, except to go to her university classes, because she doesn't want to see the reactions her scars cause in people. She has phobias, and her self esteem is non-existent.

Enter Xander. XANDER I LOVE YOU PLZ MARRY ME AND HAVE MY BABIES .

Honestly he rubbed me a little the wrong way at the start, but then he wriggles into Eden's life and pushes at her to open up. The way he cares about her, loves her and the way he proclaims his love and awe of her to a world wide audience.... I die. He's just. So. Wonderful. Hnnnnngh.

Eden, while at the start of the book is broken, the way she puts herself back together, with Xander's help, is honestly I can't come up with any other word than inspirational. She has no problems with calling Xander on his bullshit and challenging him just the way he challenges her. She's supportive of his goals, the same way he is supportive of hers. They just seemed to completely mesh. I don't think I have read a book where the characters suited each other and just gelled so well, in a long time.

Oh also - his explanation of why he calls her Gem. Good lord. I'm just a big pile of melted goo on the floor. Seriously. This guy!

This book might not be for everyone, because the drama levels are really low. It is very much a story of love growing between two people, one of whom is healing after a tragic accident, and the other who is an MMA fighter. The storytelling is very laid back and relaxed, and while some might call it slow... I really enjoyed the pace and the fact that no aspect of their early relationship was rushed. Someone as broken as Eden would never be able to jump straight into bed with a guy, and this realistic pacing and growth of their relationship was quite refreshing. However when they did get together. Yes. Oh yes. It was hot. It was steamy. And it was safe .

The negatives about this.... it was a little long. 400 pages for a romance book is a big commitment. And while everything in there seemed necessary, certain things could have probably been trimmed down a little. Since I'm talking about drawbacks too -

This book, while it is an MMA romance novel, is as much about Eden's growth and recovery, as it is about MMA and cage fighting. And that is what sets it apart. It is a character study in acceptance, love, grief and dealing with your own demons.

I could barely put it down. I am very much looking forward to reading the next installment. Natalie Gayle, I will be reading everything else you have written, you've just gained a new fan.

Brave was a lot different from what I had expected and from MMA reads in general.

Two characters, both at a critical and crucial crossroads in their lives, and have faced ordeals quite discerning than others.

Xander is your swoon-worthy fallen from grace, MMA fighter-- who finds himself a dilemma when in one of his fights, his opponent tragically dies.

As for Eden Summers-- an up and coming model hopeful, her dreams of making it big are put on the line after a disastrous incident occurs and she is left physically and emotionally damaged.

But when fate intervenes and brings these two together, they are put to the ultimate test of facing their pasts and themselves; as well as, are put through the ringer of learning how to move forward on with their lives while confronting the demons that plague them.

I have to say, that I really and truly enjoyed this first installment in this series and I’m definitely looking forward to more.

5 emotional, sweet, and fear fighting stars. The story is told between both his and her points of view which makes for a very complete picture involving their inner demons, how they face them, and how the two come together as a couple. Xander is an all around great guy but has an inner struggle he attempts to suppress. He's honest, charming, caring, disciplined, and loyal. Eden is a great women but clearly has demons. She's smart, compassionate, sweet, and a fighter.

Eden suffers from the scars left behind due to her saving her two sisters from a house fire. She suffers from low self-esteem due to how horrible people react to her scars ranging from pity to disgust, regardless if it is a peer or a doctor. She struggles to deal with people outside of her family and therapist, going to university every day alone is a struggle. She's smart, creative, and has a great sense of humor but most people see the scar on the side of her face and can't get past it. Eden's entire world changes when Xander decides to enter it.

Xander is quite possibly one of the best kinds of male characters to fall in love with because he's just imperfect enough to be real but still oh so perfect. He's a business owner in his twenties, inspires others to face their problems and fears, and is always willing to help someone. On the surface, Xander is confident and wonderful but inside he's dealing with his own kind of demon which keeps him from professional MMA matches. Killing a man in sport weighs upon his very soul but it seems that Eden might be the cure for that.

While Xander pushes Eden to be confident in herself, accept herself, and to move forward in life, Eden pushes Xander to face his own demons. The two help one another move forward in life while falling in love along the way. Their kind of love is beautiful, bright, and creeps into your very being. It isn't overt and in your face but grows steadily and naturally through the pages. The story has a moment where Xander stands up for Eden after feeling powerless due to the nasty comments about her scars and begins a trend on social media, #brave, along with saying his piece during a press conference. He gives a voice to all those that have ever felt less than because of others and shows Eden truly how much he loves her. It was a powerful and beautiful moment which highlighted a massive problem in today's society, the issue of perfection being considered beautiful and anything less as gross and disgusting.

When we as a reader, open a book, whether its in paperback or on your kindle, we open our minds, hearts and souls to the story the author has written.

With every passing page, we lose ourselves in the magic of the story, allowing us to connect with the characters, and to feel everything they do from their laughter, to their tears and their anger and joy. A well written book will do that to you.

But sometimes you open a book that allows you to connect with the characters through the magic essence of the authors words on a whole other level, and in doing so, alters you as a person. I think life-changing is more accurate to be honest. It's almost like the author looked inside your mind and decided that your story needed to be told.

Brave is one of those books!!!!

Brave, the first book in the Oni Fighers series by Natalie Gayle follows the story of Xander "Prettyboy" Todd, a MMA fighter turned martial arts instructor and Eden Sommers a model turned recluse, their lives changed forever in the space of minutes.

Xander left professional MMA fighting, the night his opponent died in the ring during a title fight because of a punch that Xander had landed. Although Xander was cleared and it was deemed an accident, he lives with the guilt day in, day out. Fighting the demons that haunt him daily since that night.

Eden had her life planned at the age of sixteen, with signed contracts to catapult her into modelling stardom. But a fire that engulfed her house changed her life's course, leaving her badly scarred, robbing her of her modelling career and her self-esteem. Literally turning her into a recluse.

Eden is slowly getting back her life on track with the aid of weekly therapy sessions and is enrolled in university, studying accounting and IT. She keeps to herself as much as possible, avoiding interaction with people because of the way they react to her scars, and how that interaction makes her feel.

A chance meeting at a cafe, while Eden is having afternoon tea with her sisters, which are Xander's students changes the course of both their lives, almost like fate knew that they needed each other at that particular time in their lives.

The more time they spend together, Xander slowly brings Eden out of her shell, pushing and prodding until she is able to face some of her fears. And bit by bit the old Eden emerges. But Eden learns to push and prod back, forcing Xander to face his fears especially those that concern his fighting career. As she puts it - "if I have to do this, so do you"

When Xander decides to take a much publicized MMA fight in Vegas, his public and personal life is thrust into the limelight, sending the media into a tailspin. Nothing is off limits, including his relationship with Eden.

Can he protect Eden from the unwanted media spotlight? Protect her from himself and all the demons that still haunt him? Can Eden stand by Xander and show the world what she's made of? Can their love overcome everything thrown at them? To find out you'll just have to pick a copy.

I couldn't put this book down, it captivated me from the very first page, drawing me in further with every subsequent page, and if it weren't for the fact that I really needed to sleep, I would've finished it in one sitting.

For me this book was very personal.

It almost felt like I was standing in Eden's shoes reliving everything that she was going through, having been there already in my life.

The feeling of not belonging anywhere.

The feelings of being unworthy and ugly.

Constantly hiding who you are - physically, emotionally, mentally because you're scared. Scared of being hurt.

Being afraid of experiencing new places, meeting new people because you're unsure of how people are going to react to you, treat you.

Needless to say the tears flowed on and off throughout, but at the same time, I had Xander's words flowing through Eden to me, which made me pause and think. Sit up and take notice. Realize that I can fight the Oni that live inside me. That I can take charge of my life and be anyone that I want.

This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. Complete with tears, laughter, anger and happiness. Add some hot and sexy bedroom scenes, a little suspense from the supporting characters and more then a few 'I so want to kick their butt" moments and you have Brave.

Brave will leave you on an emotional high, once you're finished, with a huge smile on your face and a few tears in your eyes and with a determination to be nothing but #brave and conquer your demons.

If I could give Brave more then five stars I would. It deserves so many more than that. It has become my number one book of 2015 and one that will stay with me for a very long time to come.

Thank you Natalie for writing this amazing book, its going to change lives!!!

Fear can motivate… or cripple…

Xander Todd had noticed Eden Sommers when they were teenagers. He still remembered her beauty and sheer happiness in that moment. Years later, that treasured memory was going to trigger a chain of life-changing events for both of them.

Nicknamed “Pretty Boy” by his trainer, Xander was focused on MMA life as a gym owner and trainer, no longer a professional fighter himself. Eden’s future had changed in an instant and she was still struggling to regain her place in the world. She had the support of her family but after many friends deserted her, she had withdrawn. University was a big step, but Xander was going to be the biggest leap of faith yet.

I’ve read this author before and loved her previous series. This book had many of the same elements with a great writing style, natural dialogue and interesting characters but all that goodness seemed to be amped up a notch. Xander and Eden seemed to be just what the other needed at exactly the right time. They were both suffering in their own way but managed to nudge, cajole and support each other to a point where they could move forward again. Xander seemed to know the way to get through to her, even if it was with a bit of tough love.

“I don’t hate you. Can’t say I like you much at the moment, but I don’t hate you. However, you do make a pretty good pillow to cry into.”

The story seems to be split into almost two different flavored parts. The first half centered around Eden; her growth and the building of her relationship with Xander. The second half focused on Xander and how he was moving forward in his life. Throughout it all though was the wonderful buildup of intimacy between the two – both emotional and physical. I don’t know which was hotter, as the physical scenes between the two were so HOT but the emotional connection between the two was even sexier.

With family and friends supporting them both, there are a host of secondary characters I would love to see have their own story. Dane, and the mystery he brought to the story, is a great choice. I can’t wait! ~ Diane, 5 GREAT BIG STARS!

~~~
I won’t lie; I had some misapprehensions coming into Brave. The blurb, while excellent and intriguing, made me wonder about Xander and Eden’s demons (duh, Beth, it’s supposed to!) and whether my poor heart could handle them.
It could. It did. And I am so happy about it.
Both Eden Sommers and Xander Todd saw their dream careers disappear in a matter of seconds. For Eden, the pain of losing it all is something she is still fighting. For Xander, that broken feeling inside is what’s holding him back.
Can these two wounded souls find what they need in each other to face their pasts, their fears and their hurts and make a new future…together?
This Beauty and the Beast story was a lot of things. It was sexy, it was fun and funny at times, it was surprising, and it was touching. There’s a wonderful message in this book – a message about facing your fears, about pushing through, about seeing beyond what’s on the outside, to what’s buried within. I was moved by this book, and by this message.
Natalie Gayle is a new-to-me author, and she gave me a cast of secondary characters which ensure that I’ll be coming back for more of her work in the future. I loved the connections that were found among this group of friends – a group that were willing to love and support each other. It was a beautiful thing to see the tension in this story come from the demons within, and not so much from the people surrounding the characters. It forged connections that were believable, that still had moments of anger, frustration, pain and misunderstanding, but never felt forced.
There were, I admit, one or two passages that felt overly long – almost too much explanation – but maybe that’s just because I was eager to get the end, so I could find out what happened with Xander and Eden. Because I cared about them. About what they went through, together and alone, and about where they were headed. Brave moved from the start of their journey to the end in a natural, easy way and still had me on the edge of my seat; it almost felt like it was a book in two parts, which came together and made one long, enjoyable, eye-opening whole. It grew and changed as the characters did, and I loved that about it.
I can’t wait for the next Oni Fighters book and to find out more about Dane and what’s going on with him. Ms. Gayle planted the seed for his story, and my fertile mind is already coming up with theory upon theory. Next time, there will be no misapprehension about picking it up. You won't be able to stop me. ~ Beth, 4.5 stars
Anyone who knows me knows how much I love a good fighter romance and Brave was no exception. To be completely honest I wasn't expecting such a deep, emotional story but Brave was that and so much more.
Xander was fourteen years old when he saw beauty for the first time and he's never forgotten the girl that gave it to him. Now, twelve years later Xander has the opportunity to get to know that girl and he takes it. What he wasn't expecting was for that girl to become the most important thing in his life.
Five years ago Eden was on her way to becoming the model that she always dreamed of being and then it was all taken away from her in one night. When I read what happened to her I couldn't help but think that the title of this book says it all... I mean, that is one brave chick! Seriously, she has easily become one of my favorite heroine's.
When Xander and Eden meet the connection is instant but both of them have a few demons to overcome before they can really be what the other needs. Eden really starts to come out of her shell thanks to Xander and Xander steps back in a cage for the first time in three years to be able to be the man that Eden deserves.
I absolutely loved watching their relationship progress. Xander was the perfect guy for Eden... He was tough when he needed to be and soft and tender when that's what Eden needed. He pushed her to stop focusing on her scars and be comfortable in her own skin. And in turn, Eden forced Xander to face his demons and get back to living his dream.
What made this book even better for me was the fact that they didn't have any of the relationship angst that I was expecting. It would have been so easy for Natalie Gayle to make them each have such high walls around themselves that they pushed each other away but it was the exact opposite with these two. Because they each had their own demons they were able to connect on a more emotional level.
Honestly, I know I said that they were each my favorite in their own right but I think Xander and Eden might just be my favorite book couple, at least my favorite in quite a while, anyway. The emotional journey that these two took me on will definitely be staying with me for some time. Seriously, this book needs to be read whether you're a fan of fighter romance or not.
This book needs more than 5 STARS
Brave was the first book I have read by Natalie Gayle and I was totally blown away, I was only 25% in and I had to message the author and tell her how much I was loving it and that I would be recommending this book to my friends, family and blog followers.
Xander 'Pretty Boy' Todd is a MMA Fighter but following a major incident in his life he no longer fights professionally, he teaches Martial Arts to others and encourages them to face their fears and fight for what they want but does he have the strength needed to face his own battle. Eden Sommers was an upcoming Model but following her own tragedy she becomes withdrawn from society and has her own demons to fight. Can these two help each other over come their fears and be stronger ?
Brave will take you on an emotional roller coaster from start to finish, drawing so many emotions from you tears, laughter, anger and happiness plus don't forget the HOT STEAMY SEX for good measure.
I know that this book will be one that stays with me on so many levels, we all have demons that need to be answered and BRAVE shows you that we can all fight and be better with the right help and support.
Thank you Natalie for writing this amazing book. xx
“I raised my eyelids that final few millimeters and forced my eyes to focus on his. Right then and there the world stopped spinning for me. Time halted. My sisters faded into the background and I looked into the eyes of one of the most compelling people I had ever seen. Oh, he was handsome, but he was so much more.”
5 brutally beautiful stars. This book had it’s fair share of sadness and dark times but overall it was a very sexy read. And did I mention there’s an MMA fighter?? Oh yeah!!
A moment in time, that’s all it took. Beauty, pain and tragedy.
Xander “Pretty Boy” Todd was a demon in the ring. A professional MMA fighter with a career that had the world a buzz—but now it’s gone. Or is it?
Eden Sommers had her dreams of an international modelling career within her grasp—and lost it. Gone within a few seconds, leaving nothing but pain.
How do you go on, when the one thing that defines you is suddenly ripped away—only to leave scars and a hollow shell in its place? Has the beauty gone forever? Or has it just retreated—to now be hidden, and dormant; guarded by the inner demons?
Can these two wounded souls find the inner strength to fight back the demons together and find the beauty in their lives once again?
To do this, they must first accept—The hardest demons to defeat are the ones inside. They’ll have to be BRAVE.
Eden isn’t the girl she used to be. The vivacious fun Eden, who had the world at her feet. She just signed her contract with a top modeling agency and then the world came crumbling down around her. After a horrible fire, left her permanently disfigured on the side of her face and body, she reverted into herself and became a shell of her former self. Xander is a professional MMA fighter a complete animal in the ring but that all changes one night while in the ring with another fighter. This book has a lot of heart and so many emotional moments!! I totally fell for Xander, I mean how can you not?? Great great book, you’d be crazy not to one click this!!!
I was so fortunate to receive an Arc of this amazing story of Xander and Eden as they take a very emotional journey together. Both are fighting their own Demons for different reasons. Xander is determined to push Eden into rediscovering her self worth and helping her see that beauty is not always skin deep it's what you carry inside is where true beauty can be found. He just needs to get her to trust him and see that he really wants to help her and that he genuinely does have an interest in her as more than a friend or charity project,Eden is not going to be convinced so easily as she has spent the last 5yrs hiding in the shadows after a tragic accident that has left her both physically and emotionally sacred. Xander is mma fighter who has also been fighting his own Demons for 3yrs now after a tragic accident occurred while he was fighting in the cage. No matter how hard he tries to push it away to the back of his mind he can't forget what happened. It isn't until he is approached about going back in the ring that everything comes to the surface. it takes Eden pushing him to finally get him to come to terms that he needs to come out and fight his own demons before he can preach to others about fighting theirs. They both have a hard and emotionally journey to travel to get to where they need to be but if your Brave enough to stand up and fight for the ones you love it will all be worth it. if I could give 10 stars I genuinely would this book is an amazing read and will have you feeling so many emotions and will have you fallen in love with both Xander and Eden. And it delivers such an inspirational message that you should never judge anyone because you don't know what they are or have been through. Thank you so much Natalie for sharing this beautiful story. Can't wait for Dane story next.
OK, this was first read by Author Natalie Gayle and it won't be my last:) I really liked this story and the characters a lot!
Why not 5 Stars, hmmmm, ok where to begin. It just felt like the story was "missing" that little something, I don't know, maybe it's just me and as much as I truly liked it a lot, I personally wanted a bit "more"......
OK, so on to the characters. The main characters Xander and Eden, oh my, I truly LOVED and ADORED them with. They both had some very tragic circumstances behind them but together they were PERFECT for each other. Xander was just......P E R F E C T in every sense of the word:)
The secondary characters, Eden's sisters, Reed, Dane, and especially Xander's dad were terrific! I would have liked a little more angst maybe, nothing to spoil the story but enough to get my blood flowing if that makes sense but all in all a terrific sweet and loving romance story!
I loved when Xander knew what his woman was thinking, "suddenly wished we weren’t here in a public place. “I’ve got a good idea I know what you’re thinking, Gem, and I promise you it’s going to be every bit as good.” You just don't keep Xander away from his woman, he becomes savage like a rabid dog, "I cut him off savagely, “Well, it isn’t about what you want. It’s about what I need. And I need Eden with me as soon as possible.” I snarled at Reed." I liked Xander he was caring, yet bossy, yet don't get in his face or I'll bust your head in.
It’s hard to describe how much I loved reading Brave. I have a mental list of what I think makes a great book. It’s probably not everyone’s list, but it’s mine and it’s not very often that a book ticks everyone one of those boxes. BRAVE is one of those books.
I’m just going to tell you about the ‘big’ items on my list.
First of all, I have to love the main characters and I’m not just talking about the hot alpha male. Although Xander definitely fits into that category. Eden touched my heart, maybe because there is a little bit of Eden in all of us. I was unhappy when she was and I rejoiced as her confidence grew. I also became angry when others tried to destroy her happiness. Xander made me swoon not because of his extreme hotness but because of who he was – a caring man who would do anything for the people he loved. But there were also minor characters that I grew to love (or hate).
But I also have to love the story. I want to read something that stops me wanting to do anything else. The housework gets ignored, TV shows are recorded and I only go to sleep when the words start to blur. That happened while I was reading BRAVE.
The final thing is that I want to finish a book with a smile on my face, especially if I’ve had a few anxious moments while reading. I’m a sucker for a HEA and Natalie Gayle gave me a HEA which put a smile on my face. But not only did I finish BRAVE with a smile on my face, I also had a warm feeling in my heart because Xander and Evie made me believe in a better world.
I gave BRAVE 5 stars.
So, I'm just going to keep this review short and sweet. I have been hearing a lots of great things about this book. When I first read the synopsis of this story, I was intrigued. It sounded right up my alley. So, when I saw that this book was available on NetGalley, I didn't hesitate to request it. Brave started off with a very promising start. It was a beauty and the beast sort of tale. I really liked the idea of the story and found myself intrigued by Eden and her past.
Sadly, this book just didn't work for me. I had a lot of issues with the pacing of this story. It started off kinda slow, which isn't normally a big deal for me. However, I kept waiting for the pace to pick up and it just never happened. It just felt like the story was dragging and that nothing was really happening. Honestly it was way too long of a book to be this slowly paced. I found myself getting bored really easily and contemplated DNFing the book quiet a few times.
Even thought Brave did not quite work for me, there were some things that I did like. The characters were likable and interesting. I liked how Xander treated Eden. He worked very hard to earn her trust and make her come out of her shell. This book did have some really sweet moments, but it just wasn't enough for me. I know that I am in the minority here and that a lot of people really enjoyed this book. This is just my opinion.
Xander has liked Eden since he was 14 years old. 12 years later he sees her again. Eden never knew that Xander has had an eye on her since they were young. Eden had a contract with a modeling agency when a fire broke out and she ran in to save her family. This left severe scars both mentally and physically. Since the fire, Eden had become a shell. She rarely interacts or leaves her home except to go to school. Eden’s two sisters take karate and their sensei is Xander and that is how he reunites with Eden. Xander tries to get Eden out of her shell. Xander is also trying to fight something that has left him with nightmares.
The characters were fine. For the longest time, I thought one of the sisters was jealous that Eden was spending time with Xander. All that felt awkward to me. Once Eden and Xander got together there was very little left to the story. Conversations and situations became predictable. The dialogue at times felt flat.
I would have preferred if the switch in POVs did not happen so frequently. I knew everyone’s thoughts as at moment which left out any intensity.
In the end, it can be seen as a sweet contemporary romance.
I loved this book from the beginning to the end. I loved every second of it. It's definitely a book you can not put down and has all the things a great book should have.
I loved Xander and Eden both. They are two strong characters that help each other through some of the hardest times of their lives. Xander noticed Eden for the first time as they were teenagers. That memory of Xander's will set into motion a lot of life changing events for both of them. Im no fan of spoilers and I try not to retell exactly what the book is about in a review. You already get that in the description. It's a book with two strong lead characters and lovable secondary characters. An emotional read full of self discovery, pain,lost dreams,strength,courage, compassion, honor, love bravery and the ability to overcome together and Individually.
It's a great read that of do not want to miss. Natalie Gayle has done a amazing job writing this book I look forward to reading many more books from her
~*~ Obsessed by books arc given in exchange for an honest review ~*~
"We're all damaged, Eden. We all have fears and demons that eat at our insides. Dome are more obvious than others, but they're all there. We all have them. Anyone that tells you different is lying."
This contemporary MMA novel is poignant, bittersweet, emotional and perfectly executed. It is awe inspiring and quite frankly a testament to the author's talent. Focusing on a positive message this story has layers and left me contemplating on how I can stand up and be #Brave.
Eden has her life planned, her dreams are coming true and a bright modeling career is in her not so distant future until tradegy strikes. A fire threatens her beloved sisters and Eden is badly injured saving them. Three years on and Eden has become a shadow of her previous vibrant self. The road to recovery is long after suffering from burns and Eden finds herself hiding herself away, unable to cope with the mixed looks of pity and horror on others faces. Trying hard to regain some semblance of normality Eden battles every day to go out, study and only socialises with her sisters. Learning the hard way that people are often very cruel. Eden struggles to look at herself, to engage with people and has culivated coping mechanisms to deal with her scars, even going to see a counselor to try to move forward. Unfortunately she just can't see past the scars to what lies beneath.
Xander a promising MMA fighter has turned his energy into a successful business, a trainer and instructor he uses his experience and knowledge to motivate others. Channeling his pain into something positive he has earned a reputation of being a man in charge, no one argues with Pretty Boy. Having glimpsed a perfect moment when the Sommers girls first moved into the neighbourhood many years ago he had never forgotten the beauty he witnessed. Eden struck a chord deep within Xander that day and seeing her so withdrawn is the catalyst he needs to introduce himself. A man on a mission Xander hopes to reunite the beautiful soul he remembers with the fragile shell she has become. Offering to train her Xander shocks Eden with his honesty.
The pair of them embark on an epic battle, facing their fears and overcoming challenges valiantly together. By helping Eden to see past the damage that is truly only skin deep Xander unlocks the door that his personal ghost is hiding behind. Can Eden help him win his war? Can Xander step back into the cage or will the torment of knowing he killed someone forever hold him back from the destiny he was meant to fulfill?
The depths of how cruel and shallow society of today is highlighted and showcased beautifully in their story. I really connected with their outrage, hurt and anger as their love was overshadowed by her not perfect appearance without a thought of the impact those words had. No matter how throw away the comment may have been meant the words can cut deep and have so much power. Bullying is a serious issue in a world that is so invested in appearances and social media. Words are a weapon and too often people are judged and labeled but Brave tackles this in a sensitive thought provoking manner, showing how everyone can actually make a difference. This cleverly written story weaves a wonderful love story with a life affirming message that leaves the reader breathless. The devil is in the detail and the training, fight scenes and routines are so vividly described I could visualise the motions playing out blow by blow in my imagination. Their intimate moments are not only emotionally charged but super sexy and sensual. The attraction between then sizzles. Xander is ...well ...awesome! He is determined, with a body to die for and his heart is pure gold. Eden is a ray of light and even in her darkest place she is still someone full of strength and beauty.
A five star #Brave read.
After reading the Preface from the author, “Brave is new territory for me. I saw a photo and I had a whole storyline pop into my head. It was tragic and beautiful – a story of being brave enough to face and overcome your fears,” I knew I was going to love this book. The words grabbed at my heart and propelled me into chapter after chapter of wonderful writing filled with such emotion that I couldn’t help but feel all encompassed by the characters and their stories.
The depth of the H, Xander, and the h, Eden, was amazing. I felt the emotions they were struggling to contain both individually and together. I laughed along with their jokes, cried with their sadness and pain and reveled in their happiness and contentment.
The most poignant and heart stopping quote of the book came from our beloved H to his beautiful Gem (best pet name I’ve ever read), his precious girl. “You may not believe me yet. But I’m going to remind you, show you, just how beautiful you are. You gave me beautiful once. I’m going to give it back to you.” Although you will have no context of this quote until you read the book, once you do you will understand the enormity of it and how it shapes the relationship between Xander and Eden. Brave is a beautiful story of courage and strength, the ability to overcome your demons (both physically and mentally) and, most importantly, true love.
This was my first book by Natalie Gayle, but it absolutely will NOT be my last. I am really looking forward to the second in the series…I just hope we don’t have to wait too long!
4.5 star
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, pain, and heartbreak.
This is Eden and Xander’s story. Eden and Xander are both a little broken and fighting demons. When Xander gets Eden to talk to him and start fighting her fears she pushes him to do the same. Can they each help the other out and overcome their fears? Xander wants Eden but can she believe that he wants her for her and not what she used to be? Can Eden deal with what she feels she lost and embrace what she has? Can Xander face his fear of getting back into the ring and fighting again? When it’s time to face there fears and be brave will they do it together? Will facing there fears bring them together more or end up ripping them apart?
I loved these characters and also the side characters. I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next story from this author.
I had been looking forward to reading this book after seeing a teaser on Facebook. I had read Natalie Gayle's previous work but the emotion of this story really appealed to me. I was not disappointed. This book had a hero and heroine that were struggling to deal with events from their past and the story showed how they were able to help each other become whole.
This is a sweet story, our hero Xander, is tough and Alpha but he doesn't play games or give Eden any doubt about his position in her life. I found this refreshing.
Although the love story is beautiful there are gritty aspects to Brave. The MMA aspect was described in such detail that I felt I was a part of the team preparing for the Championship!
I am looking forward to the next book in this series, as although the story of Eden and Xander has been concluded there are other characters I am dying to find out about in more detail.
When I discovered Natalie Gayle had a new book releasing, I was excited, but when I found out it involved a hot MMA fighter, that was a whole new level of excitement, and I jumped on the chance to review it.
When tragedy strikes, aspiring model Eden Summers’ career is put on the line. Xander Todd is a professional MMA fighter whose career is also put on the line. But, when these two meet, they find their inner strength.
This book contains it all! There are swoon-worthy moments, witty moments, steamy moments, and tearful moments that all come together to make this one fabulous read. Both Eden and Xander battle inner demons, proving they can overcome all adversity by being brave.
This is only first book in the Oni Fighters Series, and I cannot wait for book two.
I absolutely loved this book. what a fantastic story. I don't usually claim a book boyfriend but Xander is so awesome I have claimed him. I have loved any Natalie Gayle book I have read but this one is hands down my favourite. She has a talent of writing so you are drawn into the characters. I was feeling what Eden felt, experiencing the emotions Xander experienced. You cant help but fall in love with these strong, brave determined characters. The love and beauty that is created when they come together will fill your heart and soul. You will ride the emotional roller coaster with this book. I couldn't put it down once I picked it up (I finished it at 4am) and just wanted to tell everyone to read it right then and there. put this book to the top of your TBR list.
How often do you find a book that reminds you of the process of falling in love? Not just the good parts but the best parts...pushing each other to be better and overcoming the past. Xander and Eden both have their own demons but manage to find strength in each other to face them and slowly overcome them. Demons of Xander's past prevent him from fights and the Demon Eden wears causes her to hide from the world. But in the end they both push each other to be better.
Natalie Gayle has me hook on the Oni fighters! Xan and Eden, the supporting cast were all great. I was drawn in and wanted to know more. Each fight scene was so detailed and intense!
This book has young love, intense fight scene, a hood rat, and ride or die sisters.
I can't wait for the next one!!
I received this as an ARC for my honest review. I honesly loved this book. I loved watching these 2 people fall in love and each overcome their own hangups and insecurities. They each had their own separate "scars" both literally and figuratively they had to overcome, and together they helped each other to believe they both deserved love and happiness in their lives. They were a perfect match. I've found a new author that I love and I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out. I highly recommend this book.
