Half-Century Wait Over for First Same-Sex Couple to Marry in Dallas County, Texas – at Age 85 and 82: 'We're Having a Blast'

Jack Evans, 85, and George Harris, 82, waited over half a century for this moment.

The men, together for 54 years, were the first same-sex couple to wed today in Dallas County.

Their nuptials came just hours after the Supreme Court’s landmark decision enabling gay couples to marry in all 50 states.

Evans tells PEOPLE of his wedding day: “You would have been blown away by the crowd there, there must have been 450 people there, people waiting to get married, reporters. It was amazing. Just amazing.”

And how does the groom feel? “Worn out,” he says. “It is a lot of work to have a wedding in one day. We’re having a blast.”

When asked if he ever thought this day would happen, Evans says: “Ten years ago it was not within the realm of possibility.”

Texas is one of 14 states that still prohibits gay marriage.

Dallas County’s district and family court judges reportedly waived the usual 72-hour waiting period between receiving a marriage license and performing a ceremony, bringing tears to the eyes of Kristy Johnson.

She and her partner, Ingrid Snelling, together for 22 years, rushed to the county clerk’s office following the ruling.

“I just broke down and bawled when I heard it,” Johnson tells NBC5. “There will be more tears. She s the love of my life. My sun and my moon and my best friend.

“And to now be able to take that step and make it official, legally. No more being turned away from hospitals and feeling humiliated when I needed to care for her – which has happened to me. This means a whole lot.”
