Off-duty American Pie actor Jason Biggs dresses down for casual lunch date with wife Jenny Mollen in NYC

He was recently criticised for having gained a few extra pounds.

But American Pie actor Jason Biggs looked in full-on sport mode as he stepped out for a casual lunch date with his wife Jenny Mollen on Monday.

The pair looked like they'd emerged fresh from the gym as they strolled through New York's Tribeca district in exercise apparel.

The box office star, 36, who recently became a father, kept it low-key in a T-shirt, pair of shorts and flip-flops, while hiding his face under a pair of designer sunglasses.

Meanwhile, his wife wore a pair of royal blue tracksuit bottoms with a grey vest top and loosely-worn hoodie.

Together, the couple looked seriously off-duty as they took to the streets of Manhattan.

Biggs wont be bored in his downtime, however - he is currentlystarring alongside Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss in the Broadway play The Heidi Chronicles.

His hands are also full with firstborn son Sid, who tuned one earlier this year.

The 36-year-old, who has stated that he is often cast in Jewish roles even though he is not Jewish, is well-known for causing controversy on Twitter.

In March of last year, after Malaysia Airlines flight 370 went missing with 239 people on board, the actor Tweeted about the The Bachelor: 'Nikki is looking for Juan Pablo to say "I Love You." She'd have better luck looking for Malaysian Airlines Flight 370.'

Despite coming under heavy fire for his remarks, he followed it up three months later when a second Malaysia Airlines plane was shot down over Ukraine by tweeting: 'Anyone wanna buy my Malaysian Airlines frequent flier miles?'

Only a few weeks ago he tweeted: 'When I was your age, I used to be able to joke on Twitter" will soon be the new "I used to walk miles to school barefoot in the snow".'

Still, it might be fitting that he courts controversy because rumours are still circulating that Jason could be reprising his American Pie character for another sequel.

It's not too surprising execs are interested in another installment - 2012's Reunion grossed over $230million in worldwide box office.

The four films in the series (not including the straight-to-DVD spin offs) stand at a combined $989million in revenue - just $11million short of making it a billion dollar box office franchise.

Casting the actors to reprise their roles may be difficult though - according to USA Today, Reunion was only able to go ahead thanks to stars Sean William Scott and Jason Biggs convincing the other actors to reprise their roles.
