Families SA boss resigns in wake of child sex scandal

Families SA boss David Waterford has resigned in the wake of the child sex scandal which has rocked the department.

Last Tuesday it was revealed a Families SA carer had been charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with seven young children under his watch.

In a written statement released today, Mr Waterford said following new media reports on Friday in regards to the alleged offender, he revisited documents and realised he had misinterpreted information.

“This failure caused me to honestly but inaccurately brief the Minister and Chief Executive,” his statement said.

“I believe that as a consequence the Minister made statements that were inaccurate.

“Having identified this serious mistake on my part, I determined that I should resign.”

He said the ongoing police investigation and suppression orders meant he could not identify the document.

On Friday, News Corp reported the worker had been investigated a year ago for alleged inappropriate behaviour involving a female toddler in his care.

At the time Mr Waterford and Child Development Minister Jennifer Rankine indicated there had been no previous suspicions about the man.
