Mercedes-Benz is putting the final touches on the next C-Class Coupe, and Gorden Wagener, the company’s design chief, has provided insight on what to expect from it when it lands.
Tentatively set to debut next September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the next C-Class Coupe will borrow a sizable amount of design cues from the bigger S-Class Coupe but it will be “sleeker and more beautiful.” Mercedes is keeping full details under wraps until the C’s official introduction but Wagener hinted that the coupe will be “even better to drive than it looks.”
The bulk of the two-door C’s engines will likely be sourced directly from its four-door counterpart. In North America, the coupe’s entry-level engine will be a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit rated at 241 horsepower and 229 foot-pounds of torque. Buyers after more grunt will be able to order a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that will make 329 ponies and a healthy 345 foot-pounds of twist.
Both engines will be linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive will come standard, and Mercedes’ weather-beating 4Matic all-wheel drive system will be available at an extra cost on select models.
It goes without saying that the Stuttgart-based automaker will take a shot at the BMW M4 with a AMG-massaged version of the C-Class Coupe. Like the sedan, the C63 Coupe will be powered by a 4.0-liter V8 engine that will use two beefy turbochargers to make 470 horsepower in its most basic state of tune.
Look for additional details about the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe to emerge in the weeks leading up to its debut in Germany. After introducing the coupe, Mercedes will round out the C-Class lineup with a convertible set to battle against the BMW 4-Series Convertible.
