The version acquired directly from Runic Games or Perfect World Entertainment, i.e. not Steam-connected.
This includes the demo, which is actually just an unlockable full version.

What works
Installing the downloaded demo from the runic web page, and automatically updating to latest version (1.25.2.2) thru the game launcher.
Completing the demo in single player mode.
Seems to work fine with wine emulating a "virtual desktop", or without. Both "windowed", "windowed fullscreen" or "fullscreen".
What does not
"Bloom" effect causes graphic corruption some times, and often crashes when changing level.
Deactivating the "bloom" effect in the video settings of the game avoids this problem.
Workarounds
What was not tested

Additional Comments
32 bits wine. In a new wine prefix (with no extra libraries), wine set to windows _7_ mode. Note that: * With wine in windows XP mode I only got a black window after the game loaded (just after the "Parsing script shaders.program" in the wine debug output). Setting wine to Windows 7 solved this issue. * The "bloom" effect in the game causes some graphic corruption and quite often crashes when loading levels. Turning it off in the game video settings avoids this problem. With these 2 fixes the game runs perfectly stable with no crashes or problems (run it for around 5 hours in total). It runs very fluidly. The only remark is that the single game thread will max 1 CPU thread all the time while running. Using an Nvidia graphics card with propietary drivers (331.113 = the ubuntu default for this graphic card). The game does shut down properly on its own.

It appears the game doesn't always shut down properly. For the all versions, this will waste RAM (and possibly CPU time). For the Steam version, this will also prevent cloud syncs, and you will not be able to re-launch Torchlight 2 until the old process is gone.
Use killall Torchlight2.exe2 to force-kill it. In my experience, this has no negative effects (if you do it after trying to shut down the game properly first).
