Tania Skeizevski heard the terrible sound of the accident early Monday morning.

“It was awful to hear it really. I live on the second floor but that bang, it was unbelievable. And then the screams.”

A 19 year-old Barrie woman is recovering in hospital tonight after being hit by a car near the city's downtown early this morning.

Mike Morton just happened to be walking by and was the first to run over to help.

“She says ‘Help me! Help me! Help me!’ she tries to stand up, falling down. I say please, baby girl, get down on the ground. I'll call 9-1-1 for you, I'll call an ambulance.”

Sue Penfound heard the collision from her bedroom and then a cry for help.

“She's saying ‘put me to sleep, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts’ so all that I could do was just talk to work trying take her mind off it. Tell her things were going to be okay.”

Police say the vehicle was travelling north on Penetang Street. The female was walking in the same direction on the road. Police say the car struck the woman and continued to head down the road. The vehicle and driver were found about 20 minutes later not far away.

Police say the teenager was hit just after 2:30a.m.

She had surgery on her legs today.

After the crash, Penetang Street was closed for several hours as police investigated.

The driver is a 20-year-old man from Minesing. He had two friends in the vehicle at the time.

“We believe at this point they were coming from the downtown area and drinking in the downtown area. But we have to make sure of all that,” said Constable Angie Butler of Barrie Police.

When asked if the victim knew what had happened to her, Sue Penfold offered this, “she didn't know when the officer asked her what had happened, she says 'I don't remember'.”

The driver remains in custody tonight. He is facing a variety of charges including impaired driving and leaving the scene. He is expected to appear in Barrie court Tuesday.

As for the victim, she underwent surgery and is still recovering at Royal Victoria Health Centre.
