Everton have been drawn to play Dynamo Kyiv in the last 16 of the Europa League as they carry the last remaining British hopes in the competition.
Roberto Martínez’s side will play the first leg at Goodison Park after they completed a 7-2 aggregate victory over Young Boys on Thursday night. They will then travel to Ukraine with some trepidation after Kyiv fans attacked stewards and fought among themselves during Thursday’s last-32 second leg win over Guingamp.
Martínez said: “It’s a draw that we’re very excited about. Dynamo Kyiv are unbeaten in their domestic league, they are top ahead of teams that we know well are very strong in Europe like Shakhtar Donetsk and Dnipro. They’ve got well-known players like [Andriy] Yarmolenko, Jeremain Lens, [Younès] Belhanda, and they play in a phenomenal ground.”
Travelling arrangements for the away leg may take some time to take shape but Martínez said: “We’re playing at Goodison the first leg and we’ll take every step as it comes and wait for instructions. You always prefer to play at home in the second leg and unfortunately that’s not the case but there’s nothing we can do.”
Everton are the only British side remaining in the competition after Liverpool, Tottenham and Celtic all crashed out on Thursday.
Besiktas, who beat Liverpool on penalties, were drawn to play Club Brugge in Friday lunchtime’s draw. Fiorentina, conquerors of Spurs, will face Roma in an all Italian affair. Roma reached this stage after coming through a fiery tie with Feyenoord, which was afflicted by crowd trouble in both legs. Internazionale who overcame Celtic 4-3 on aggregate, will have to beat the favourites Wolfsburg to reach the quarter-finals.
Spanish rivals Sevilla and Villarreal were drawn together, and both quickly admitted they would have preferred not to have been. The Villarreal coach, Marcelino, said: “The players are more motivated when playing against a team from [elsewhere in] Europe. Both teams would have chosen not to deal with each other. We play against the defending champions but we know that we are two evenly matched teams.”
The Sevilla director Monchi said: “We do not particularly like to face Spanish teams [in Europe], but is subjective. Villarreal are difficult opponents – they are having a great season. The advantage is that the trip will not be long, but it will be a difficult tie.”
