Hendricks, Brown added to UFC 185

A welterweight bout between former champion Johny Hendricks and Matt Brown has been added to a UFC 185 pay-per-view event on March 14.

UFC officials announced the fight on Tuesday. The event will take place at American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Brown (19-12) was originally scheduled to headline a UFC Fight Night event on Feb. 14 in Broomfield, Colorado, but that fell through when his opponent, Tarec Saffiedine, withdrew due to injury. The UFC eventually pulled Brown completely from the card.

A non-title welterweight bout between Stephen Thompson (10-1) and Brandon Thatch (11-1) will now headline that card at 1stBank Center.

Hendricks (16-3) forfeited the UFC 170-pound title in a split decision loss to Robbie Lawler (25-10) in December. UFC president Dana White initially stated Lawler and Hendricks would immediately fight again, however Lawler has requested additional time off after a busy 2014, per a UFC source. Hendricks, who fights out of Dallas, opted to stay busy and not wait for a title shot.

A two-time NCAA Division-I national champion in wrestling, Hendricks is 1-2 in his last three fights. He won the vacant UFC title in March in a unanimous decision win against Lawler, but was forced to sit out nearly the rest of the year due to a biceps injury. Lawler avenged the loss in a five-round title fight at UFC 181.

Brown is also coming off a decision loss to Lawler in July. The 34-year-old had won seven consecutive fights prior to the loss.

A lightweight title fight between Anthony Pettis and Rafael dos Anjos is scheduled to headline UFC 185.
