Sleepy Hollow Football Club Takes Top Prize at Somers Tournament

On Saturday November 22, the Sleepy Hollow Football Club (SHFC) entered 4 teams in the Somers Fall Classic Tournament. Despite battling 35 degree weather the SHFC did better than 9 other towns, out competing 18 other teams, to win two first place finishes and one second out of four divisions. This capped off an incredible season for the new club as they look forward to resuming play in the spring. Below are the tournament reports provided by the all volunteer coaches:

The under age 9 boys Sentinels played hard and despite dominating the attack for much of each game, were unable to get past the other teams’ defenses. They lost 1-0 to both Pleasantville and Ossining while ending games against the Croton Crush and the Croton AFC in scoreless ties.

The under age 10 boys Legends had a very enjoyable finish to the fall season with a fine performance at Somers. Fueled by gallons of hot chocolate and the odd doughnut the Legends recovered from an early penalty to tie fellow Rivertowns’ team Spartans 1:1 on a flying volley finish from Kenneth Suqui. Against old rivals Ossining, the boys scored from a low corner routine with Julian Bermeo megging the keeper and then Kyan Aguilera curled a beautiful free kick - Messi style - into the top corner. Ossining didn’t give up though and forced 2 goals in the last 2 minutes to tie it up. Supported by warming weather, strong midfield and excellent defense/ goal keeping (Massimo Soto and Nikhil Weltig in particular) the team prevailed in the next 2 games against Mt Pleasant and New Fairfield scoring 7 (Kyan Aguilera 3, Brandon Morocho 2, and 1 each from Julian Bermeo and Javier Villa) and conceding just once. They finished level on points with Ossining but lost the tie-breaker of least goals conceded by one goal, so finishing in 2nd place. This report provided by coach Fergus O’Sullivan.

The under age 11 boys Tornadoes won their division of the Somers Classic Tournament for the second year in a row on Saturday, beating out two other club teams a division above them to close a very challenging 2014 fall season. Thanks to a well-disciplined defense led by Taylor and Monteforte, and fearless goal tending by Smith and Riccuti, the team did not allow any goals in all day. Games were 1-0 against Mt. Pleasant (assist: Monteforte, goal: Dorman), 1-0 vs. 3rd place, 3rd Division Somers Shockwave (assist: Jaillite, goal: Dorman), 0-0 tie vs. 3rd division Ardsley Shockwave (2 beautiful goals by Burnet and Gallagher called back), 3-0 vs. Greenburgh Cyclones (goal: Ricciuti), (assist: Dorman, goal: Monteforte), (PK: Dorman), and 2-0 vs. Croton Galaxy (goal: Monteforte), (PK: Jaillite). The Tornadoes sincerely thank everyone in the Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow soccer community for all their incredible support and encouragement, and look forward to a great spring. This report provided by coach Todd Dorman.

The under age 12 girls Mustangs capped off an undefeated fall season with their second championship in the Somers Fall Classic Tournament in 3 years. The Mustangs defeated Mt Pleasant 1-0 off Talia Fante’s penalty kick. Next they defeated home team Somers 1-0 when Maya Weitzen scored off Julia Costa’s cross. The Mustangs then took care of Mt Kisco 3-0 with goals by Talia Fante, Britany Alban, and Carolina Lopez with one assist by Julia Costa. Finally the Mustangs tied a physical New Fairfield team 0-0 to claim first place. The Mustang defense of Maddy Navin, Sadie Swenson, Annie Dineen, Emma Clarke, and keeper Carolina Lopez did not allow a goal all tournament. Lily Rodriguez, Sophie Sylves-Berry, and Samantha Livingston played strong from their wing positions. Coach John Sutherland’s team will now participate in a highly competitive winter soccer league at Chelsea Piers Connecticut until spring.
