Volunteers, kids and their parents braved the frigid, snowy weather for the annual 'eggs-stravaganza.'

A couple hundred wee ones and their parents braved the bone-numbing wind and snow Saturday for the annual Greenwich Lions Club Easter egg hunt.

The Greenwich Lions & ShopRite Annual Egg Hunt is a fundraiser for the Lions’ work in town that includes providing assistance to the blind and visually impaired.

Volunteers from the Greenwich, Old Greenwich Lions clubs and seven students from Greenwich High and Central Middle schools spent a couple hours setting up the hunt that included the laying of 7,000 plastic eggs filled with candy on the soggy lawn of Roger Sherman Baldwin Park.

Before the appointed time, children queued up, visited with the Easter bunny and had a chance to meet to Fidelco guide dogs brought by Cos Cob resident Alan Gunzburg and his daughter Emily.

Emily enlisted the help of her GHS freshmen classmates — Rylie Metter, Julia Abbazia, Grayson Muskus, Jordan Stefanowicz and Fjolla Gaski — and Central eighth-grader Caroline Webb, to help spread out the eggs. The girls also helped out on Thursday when the Greenwich Lions Club conducted an eye health screening program to the Byram Archibald Neighborhood Center After-School Program.

“When we were little, people helped us out. It’s nice to do it now … even though it’s freezing,” said Julia.

Joe Cingari and some staff from the ShopRite of Stamford distributed balloons and shopping bags to youngsters. “We’re the main sponsors … we’ve doing it for about 10 years now. The kids love it,” Cingari said.

And that they did — as evidenced by their baskets and bags chockful of colorful plastic eggs.
