Mad Catz's Android console, Mojo, launching Dec. 10 for $249.99

Mad Catz's Mojo, an Android-based micro-console for televisions, will be available Dec. 10 for $249.99, the company announced today.

It will cost £219.99 in the U.K. and €249.99 in Europe.

Mad Catz announced the Mojo during E3 2013 as a high-end alternative to the low-cost Android micro-consoles that have launched this year, such as the Ouya and the GameStick. Here are the confirmed technical specifications for the Mojo:

  • Nvidia Tegra 4 T40S 1.8 GHz processor
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 16 GB internal storage
  • HDMI out
  • Bluetooth
  • microSD slot with support for SDXC cards up to 128 GB
  • Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

The Mojo isn't a gateway to an app store run by Mad Catz; instead, it will allow users to play their existing Android games — as long as the titles support third-party controllers — and buy new ones directly from Google Play and the Amazon Appstore. The fact that the device doesn't provide Mojo with a continuous stream of revenue from a digital marketplace likely contributes to its relatively high price.

"We're committing ourselves to being the most powerful Android console when we launch later this year," said Alex Verrey, global PR manager for Mad Catz, in an interview with Polygon at E3. The company is currently accepting pre-orders for the Mojo on its website. For more on the Mojo, check out our impressions from E3.
