The bill would require clear labeling for any food that was genetically engineered or contains at least one genetically engineered ingredient to be clearly labeled.
Senator Barbara Boxer [D-CA] and Congressman Peter DeFazio [D-OR4] introduced identical bills to their respective houses in order to bring FDA labeling policy in line with 21st century food technologies. Both bills have bipartisan cosponsors. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recognize genetically modified foods as materially different from their non-modified peers. Currently, 64 countries around the world require labels for genetically modified foods.
Similar bills in the past have failed to pass due to intense lobbying by agriculture and biotech industries such as Monsanto and the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO).
