About this item

  • Newly developed monochrome CCD sensor with a native resolution of 18 million pixels. The sensor does not "see" color, meaning real brightness values are available for each individual pixel, producing a genuine black-and-white image.
  • The classic, iconic Leica M camera design is embodied in the Leica M Monochrom. Only an engraving on the black accessory shoe reveals the product's name.
  • The camera features an extremely soft, tactile leatherette body covering in keeping with the discrete overall look. Also included with the camera is a leather carrying strap made of high-grade cowhide.
  • A full version of the world's leading black-and-white image processing software, Silver Efex Pro 2, is supplied. Silver Efex Pro 2 incorporates a unique and powerful set of darkroom-inspired tools to produce top-quality black-and-white pictures.
  • Raw data histogram for exact control of tonal values, depicting the actual raw data, unprocessed and uncorrupted.

Product Description

The world's first full frame black and white digital camera. Featuring a black and white sensor, the camera produces images in a sharpness and brilliance never before attained and barely distinguishable from other M cameras with the model name discretely engraved on the hot shoe. The newly developed monochrome CCD sensor with a native resolution of 18 million pixels delivers 100% sharper imaging thanks to direct processing of raw data with no interpolation. The low noise monochrome CCD sensor results in an extremely fine-grained image.

Just to remind that with the same amount money it is possible to buy film and paper to shoot and print about one picture for every day in a man's life.

This camera is probably for affluent eccentrics. I like it enormously. It's expensive but you should save money by buying the lenses used, for example from KEH. Be sure to read the instruction manual for the camera before buying your M series lens. Certain ones won't work.

Walker Evans observed that "color is vulgar." I agree with that . This camera does not record color info and thus gives you an immense gray scale as compensation. Too bad Ansel didn't live to own one. I suspect he'd give it 5 stars too.

I especially like how inconspicuous it looks-- it doesn't scream Leica--and it's small. You can blend into the masses and pretend you're Cartier-Bresson.

If you are a leica shooter already, you will be less likely to be troubled by the manual operation of this camera. That aside, the files this camera produces are simply stunning.

I love B&W film photography. I love the convenience of digital. I feel a bit like a traitor going to digital and a bit like a traitor snapping off frames with reckless abandon, knowing I don't have 24 or 36 but 1000's!

But I still feel as if I am adhering to the purity of black and white film with the Monochrom. Not only does it have a true black and white CCD sensor--not a color sensor with B&W software being run on top of it, something in the way it looks straight out of the camera is striking--whether it is the digital negatives or jpegs.

Something about the less filtered, less adulterated process is satisfying.

I use Heliopan filters--orange, red, green--skylight for some shots. Of course, you can apply them post-process in Lightroom, but there is something so satisfying about snapping off pics that need no post-processing whatsoever. So there you go--this camera, with a few filters and boom--lazy purist.

I've brought myself back around to a contrast/composition mindset with this camera. Portraits are striking. Landscapes are beautiful. Like a musician playing without a computer and a rack full of effects, this camera gives you "nowhere to hide" and the results are crisp and decisive and sometimes ugly, sometimes beautiful. This camera has rejuvenated my photography. Warning: Owning this camera makes you long for glass that is worthy of it. I, too caved in and bought a Noctilux after only owning this camera about a month, so there are at least two of us knuckleheads out there with an MM and a Noctilux. They certainly go together well... (MM and Noctilux, that is).

Prior to buying the Monochrom, I had owned the M9, so I was familiar with the Leica rangefinder shooting experience...all of its trials and tribulations...the sheer frustration in learning how to focus, and learning how to work with the rudimentary exposure system (as opposed to trying to deal with it), and ultimately the joy of seeing what this camera can do when you "nail" a shot.

The Monochrom, being a true Leica rangefinder, teaches you to slow down, work a scene, and, one step beyond the M9...think in terms of black and white.

As soon as I began shooting with the Monochrom, and seeing the results, I felt lucky to have one. This camera produces breathtakingly sharp and crisp imagery...this camera definitely gets the most out of the long line of amazing Leica lenses. It shoots in low light situations superbly. You can shoot all day long indoors without a flash at high ISOs and get picture perfect sharp images with minimal noise. The camera takes contrast and dynamic range to an altogether different level than any color camera can accomplish.

If you compose correctly and know how to work a rangefinder, you will be rewarded with images that will give you that Leica 3D look...and it will teach you a totally different way to think about lighting and contrast.

My only gripe is that the LCD is useless in reviewing images (it's too small and the images just look terrible). If you absolutely need to see your images via the LCD, you will feel uncomfortable using this camera until you get used to not seeing what you just shot. Once you get used to the camera, an LCD screen becomes irrelevant.
